Range rover destroyed my side mirror - modest rant

Earlier today as I was driving on a narrow, winding suburban road a range rover came past on the other side over the white line and clipped my side mirror - I suppose it was his side mirror that did it. My mirror is destroyed - hanging off and broken. The guy disappeared into the distance.

my car is a volvo s.40 - anyone an idea what it will cost to fix? or any advice on an insurance claim? I suppose with the excess and no claims it'll hardly be worth my while to claim.

I'm so mad as I'm a v careful driver but always aware that the dangers come from other drivers............and so it proves.

Sorry to hear that. I doubt it'll be worth your while claiming on your insurance as the excess is usually €200 anyway. Is it a painted mirror? Is the painted bit broken? I'd try www.ebay.co.uk and www.micksgarage.ie for starters, the painted bit aside mirrors are very easy to fit.

    sorry to hear that OP

I'd say his side mirror is too high to clip yours. It was probably the side of the Range rover that hit your mirror, which means there is probably a nice long scratch down the side of his RR. I hope that may cheer you up a little.:)

As for your mirror, unless you can track him down you will have to fork out for the mirror. Try your local scrapyard for a second hand unit.

That kind of **** happens esp on narrow country roads with trees sticking out into the road, you have to jink this way and that.

Why the assumption the Range Rover is totally at fault here?

There may be some degree of fault with the OP.

Usually 50/50 on a narrow road anyway

Because he fúcked off without stopping .... If someone broke my mirror/scratched my car you can be bloody sure I'd hang around....

had a dozy bint in a Micra lop my mirror off. had 2 choices:

    a) Do a U turn, chase her and make her pay, in which case Gardai would be called and it would be 50:50 who they would say was at fault as it'd be my word against hers

    b) stop, collect the broken bits of mirror casing off the road and try putting it back together.

took option B, and luckily it all clicked back together, apart from the glass which was all over my face and the dash.

My father got nudged by a lorry on a local bridge a couple of months ago in his camper van. Driver stopped but as my Father is getting on a bit (81), he didn't get out to look, just asked the lorry driver if there was much damage. "No mate, just a scratch, no real damage" so they went their seperate ways. Probably my Father's fault for not giving way to the truck but the drivers attitude was a bit cavalier!

The lorry bent the wing and bonnet, broke headlamp and pushed the slam panel about 40mm out of line. Had to buy another scrap van for panels (97 Renault Traffic, now pretty rare) and used a 3T mini digger to pull front end back in to line! If we'ed involved the insurance company it would have been a write off. Probably his last vehicle so worth straightening out.

Losing mirrors and getting scratches is a regular thing round here with the narrow lanes and uncut hedges.

    I dunno.......
If he had stayed around what would the outcome have been.
I'll pay for your damage if you pay for mine? I think you would probably end up paying for a respray and him the mirror. Who'd have gotten shafted there?

These things happen on narrow roads, v difficult to prove exactly who was at fault imo.

Reminds me of a story from when I started driving. I was on a narrow road near where the father lived at the time, driving his car, keeping well in and driving slowly when a lad in a white van knocked my driver side mirror clean off. The father was well pissed off, saying he wouldn't let me drive it again, it was my inexperience blah blah blah. He replaced the mirror. He was driving the next time it was smashed...less than 24 hours later. I haven't let that one go yet :D

'Fraid I can't be of much help though OP, try Ebay...always try Ebay

Any chance you could rename thread?

OP, what year is your S40, if it the current MkII S40 from 2004 onwards then the wing mirrors were changed to a slightly different design in late 2006. Something to watch out for if you are buying a second hand part from ebay or scrap yard, etc.

probably a developer in the range rover(game over),we will end paying for the scratch any way after it goes into nama with the rest of his duds.

Or on the other hand maybe just a normal person that owned a RR? Stranger things have happened.......

Narrow roads always go 50/50 without independent evidence.

I'd prefer to pay the full amount for a wing mirror than 50% of the RR damage.

OP here - Thanks for all the replies.

To be honest I'm at the age where very few things in life are black and white and I can see the other point of view to a fault. So in this case I'm certain that the problem was because the vehicle coming the opposite direction was partly on the wrong side of the road and was going far too fast.

I really cannot drive without a side mirror so I guess I'll be going to the dealer on Monday to get it replaced - its too dangerous to drive without- whatever the cost!

    thanks again

have you tried the motor insurers bureau of ireland? not too sure if they cover minor damage, as far as I'm aware there may be an excess, but they deal with accidents etc with unidentified or uninsured cars. Could be worth a look.
