Extractor w/Dampener Vs. Charcoal Filter

    [FONT=Calibri, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial]Hi there,

    I am looking at installing the following extractor fan in our new build:
    http://www.siriuscappe.com/en/products_built_in_hoods_sl902.htm

    It is an airtight build with HRV etc etc, so obviously we cannot just extract straight out a hole in the wall.

    My HRV installers told me to get a dampener for this. Basically it will seal the duct shut when the cooker is not in use and open when the extractor is switched on.
    There are gravity controlled ones (around €6) and more robust steel/plastic ones with springs (€47 +VAT). The lighter cheaper version could possibly be prone to opening on windy days or when there is a negative air pressure in the house.

    When I was speaking to the guy in the ventilation company about the dampener and explained about the HRV/Airtightness he said I would be far better off getting one that DID NOT have opening to the outside. ie a charcoal filter.

    He said that en extractor would be drawing air (and all of the house’s heat) out at a rate of around 500m3 per hour, where as the HRV would be working at 100m3 (even on boost).
    In theory this sounds like a great argument for the charcoal filters.

    I have heard people complain about the charcoal ones before, although if what the guy says is correct then it would seem like the best route to go.

    I am just wondering if anyone out there could share their experiences and/or opinions on the workings of both. The pro’s, con’s etc.

    I have gone for a charcoal filter hood - recirculation not extract.
    But I also have a MHRV air extract from the kitchen also - not over the cooker btw (you don't want it sucking up grease into the system.)
    MHRV 'works' in normal houses - i.e. people opening and closing doors to the outside, windows now and then etc.
    In practice the dampened vented system you describe should not make too much difference if you are only going to use it when the hob is on - probably only half an hour a day!
