Partner and I need to buy a new car (been driving 99 Fiesta to date as live Dublin city centre but new job requires driving). Would like a mid size vehicle and budget can stretch depending on value to be had within reason and don't know whether to go for new car with scrappage offer or go for second hand. Any recommendations as I have no clue where to start, no preferences for style or anything like that just looking for reliable car.

How far will you be driving?

    Petrol or diesel preference?

What sort of mileage will you be doing? Is it big enough to justify a diesel? Is your 10-12k budget with or without insurance?

Don't have preference for diesel or petrol. Driving will be average 70km per week and 600km once a month. Budget is without insurance but I'm lookin for cost efficiencies in relation to tax and insurance as plan to hold for four years.

Seeing as you're coming from a fiesta.

    Diesels:
    Octavia.

    X-type Jag. :D

    Focus.
    Petrols:
    Lancer.

    Mazda 6.

    Vectra.

    Civic.

    Saab 9-3.

    Avensis.

Thanks for that but they all seem a big jump from the old fiesta, I was thinking of a car around the size of Mazda3, Focus maximum.
Also would you recommend going for secondhand option as offering best value

Have one, find it very comfortable and like the size not too big not too small;)
Would you get one on the scrappage scheme for that money though:confused:

I'd say if you could stretch your budget a bit this might be worth a look:

2008 so it only costs €156 to tax per year. 50 - 55mpg can be expected.
