Failing a module

Hi can someone explain the passing system to me please.
For my course I pass if I get all over 40%,

I pass by compensation if i get average over 40%, all modules over 30%
and at least 45 credits of modules over 40%.

    Otherwise Fail.

So anyway I've failed one module definately, and might have got only 30-40 in another. So for the repeats do I have to repeat all modules less than 40% seeing as its not pass by compensation or just the ones <30% as in some modules pass by compensation. Also for the repeats, can you pass by compensation or do you have to get a straight pass then for those modules?

Yeah, I know I'm doing good in exams so far.... :(

If you get less than 30% then you can't compensate. As far as the college is concerned, you didn't meet the requirements to pass by compensation. I'm not too sure about passing by compensation in the repeats though. As far as I'm aware you need to pass straight up. I'm open to correction on that though.

I'm afraid you have to get 40% in the repeats, no compensation.

Previous poster is correct, if you get less than 30% in a module you cannot use compensation for any other module between 30% and 40% even if your overall average is over 40%.

    ...speaking from plenty experience!

OK this is a little off-topic but it relates to failing a module. Does the college charge you for the repeats? I've heard conficting stories:rolleyes:

The college don't charge you for the Autumn repeats, or at least they didn't last year. I haven't heard anything about fees for repeating this year though. If you fail the autumn repeats then you have to pay to repeat that entire module the following year.
I'm afraid you have to get 40% in the repeats, no compensation.

I sat repeats last Autumn and passed by compensation so it can be done. It's at the departments discretion though as is always the case with pass by compensation. Its also worth noting that the maximum of credits you can pass by compensation is 10 (at least in the faculty of business and law)

    Just saw this

    "Note:
Candidates who fail their Spring or Summer Examination, or who fail to present and are not debarred from sitting the Autumn repeat examinations, will be required to register online for the Autumn repeat examinations. There will be an examination entry fee of [] which must be paid online when registering for the Autumn repeat examinations."

    :(

yeah but i need someone to blame for me failing haha.
last questiong. will they put up summer 2010 exam papers online before autumn exams. lost them already :( they tend to be repetitive enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 153 ✭✭pirateninja

Probably not, I find that the previous autumn papers are very close to what will actually come up because they're not bothered coming up with 2 new papers.

That sucks about the repeat fees, I never heard anything about them been introduced!:(

They still haven't put up all of LAST years exam papers yet (only 4 from 2nd year CS are up and 2 from Autumn)

They might not be putting those up at all though. For some subjects, they've left out some years for whatever reasons they have.

    What's this about compensation!?

I got all 65+ in my modules last year, but failed a Spanish module (I got 37%). And I had to repeat!

Am I learning now that due to how good my other results were, I could have appealed and not spent the whole summer worrying about the Spanish repeat?!

Not all courses do it. I know most of the sciences do and outside that i wouldn't know. All i can say is it is a life saver(bloody physics!!!!).

Eligability for compensation depends what year and course you are in.

What were you doing last year and what year were you in?

I was in first year arts :P

    I'll get my jacket. :(

    • Students who fail to achieve the pass standard for the year at the Summer Examination must repeat all failed/absent modules at the Supplemental Examination, where there is provision to do so and if not disallowed by the Examination Board, or in a Repeat Year (see below). Marks from all passed modules are carried forward to the Supplemental Examination.

    http://www.ucc.ie/admin/registrar/marksandstandards/2010CACSSS.pdf

There is no compensation in first Arts (well from what I an make out from this!?) there is definate compensation in second though! :D

Hope this makes you feel better!

Sweet, how do you know there is in 2nd year?

Hopefully I'll be ok this year, last year was when I really needed it; myself and that Spanish module did not get on well together. :P

Its written in the mark and standards. Just follow the link I posted earlier and scroll down a few pages. :D Its crazy according to the guildlines for a joint honours in second year, provided you pass all the other modules, you can get between 30-39% in one module from each subject and pass by compensation! Kinda mental really.......

Would've been awesome if pass by compensation was in 1st year. Would have saved an awful lot of headaches personally.

My God CaptainSpeckle, I think you've just made my year with that link!

I actually can't believe what I'm reading, they're nearly making it impossible to fail the year. :s I've been stressing that if I fail a module (which hopefully won't happen regardless), I'm gonna be ****ed for the erasmus year. But this way, I can fail a module by up to 10%, and be sorted thanks to the ones I've already done?! And I've got a lot of modules out of the way already, with good marks, so in theory I've nearly passed the year already. Unbelievable!
To pass Second Arts (European Studies) a student must
    (i) achieve an aggregate of 240/600 and pass modules to the value of at least 25 credits with not less than 30% in any module in European Studies;
    (ii)
(for students taking one language): achieve an aggregate of 240/600 and pass
modules to the value of at least 25 credits with not less than 30% in any
    language module

Just been thinking about the compensation thing, and have another question -

I have one module that is 10 credits, and 60% of it is done in Continuous Asessment.

Say I get 30% in CA, and get 10% in the Summer Written exam, do I pass the module? Or does the summer exam have to be passed in order for the percentage to be taken?

You just need 10% on the paper. Thats the point of CA, to carry forward to your exam.:)

    That really is ace :P

Cheers! So I guess in theory, if you did really well in CA of a module that gives 60% to it, you wouldn't even need to turn up the exam. Unreal! :D

I'm confused at something. I need to pass 50 credits to progress to 2nd year. Let's say I fail 15 credits, so I repeat those exams, and I outright pass 10 credits, and fail the other 5 credits, but I still get over 30%.

Am I still allowed into 2nd year? I checked the Book of Marks & Standards, but it doesn't really say...

I'll email the Examinations office to make sure, but I was wondering does anybody know for sure before I ask them.

Are you sure you need 50 and not 60?

Yeah, it's 50 as long as I get over 30% in the other 10 credits.
