How strict is the 20 year old limit on classic insurance?

....the reason I ask is I'm interested in a MK1 MX-5, and the special edition with Tan leather in British racing green was manufactured in 1991 only.

I've sent off a few emails, so I can always wait for responses, but does anybody here have experience of insuring a classic 1 year too young? Is it possible or is everything too regulated by what the computer will let them do these days?

I guess if it comes to it and I find a good one I can just buy and let it sit until next year, but summer's here and now's the time for a car like that.

....slim, I'm afraid. I've tried for years.

    But I don't care.

    Y'see, my '5 - 90 G reg, hits the magic number this year anyway !! :D

Mind you, it's not expensive to insure as a 'daily driver' anyway.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The policy which we provide, the proposer can be aged between 17-99.

The problem lies in the qualifying criteria in that they must hold a full driving license for a minimum of 5 years.

So even if you received your full license on the minimum age for application you would still need to be 22 before applying for the scheme.

I've gone through the policy document for Axa Classic Car Insurance but they dont list qualifying information.

    Sorry about that.

Apologies, I read the subject line of the thread as the drivers age and not the age of vehicle.

In saying that Hibernian only classify classic's as pre 1988.

Would a 1990 Merc SL320 qualify for classic insurance?

well carol nash will not insure a 91 car on classic as my brother has garaged his RS turbo now til next year as a result. He could not get his 87 and 88 cars insured by AXA as they were under 25 years old. So both companies are out for you im afraid. Im not sure who else you can go with.

Thanks for all the replies... well screw this recession anyway for forcing me into a soulless Japanese bar of soap for my daily commute.

I guess I might have to stick with looking for a good '89 so.... and apologies for the mix up with the thread title, I'm 27 so it wasn't about me being 20 just the car :)

They insure my 16 year old Mercedes on a classic policy and don't insist on a separate "normal" policy on another car, and the classic policy continues to earn a no claims bonus. I think they're a bit selective in what makes of car qualify for classic at 15 years though.

I have a 19 year old car under classic insurance. I have a few classics though so that might have helped.

That's pathetic to put on such a strict one size catch all limit. All insurers I have ever contacted will mark any 15 year old Porsche as classic. So that's 1995, not 1988

Sorry Unkel, I would agree with you over the age but it's a condition with Hibernian.
