It could be that windows needs a reinstall? Then again it could be hardware related. I'd definitely try and do a reinstall first. You'll need to backup everything first.

cranky the exact same thing thing happened to me and I have the same model as you.
Initially the problem was intermittent but after a while the thing just gave up the ghost.

I gave it to a friend who is sh*t hot in these things and he said it was either the video chipset or something else on the motherboard is that is fried (the hard drive was fine)...either way a new motherboard probably needed...I'm not giving HP any more of my money so I cut my losses and bought a nice little Samsung N130 Netbook.

If you google the issue you will see these HP Pavillions are known for issues like this...mine was 3 years old when this happened.

I hope you get it sorted somehow.

This is a known issue with that laptop, my friend has the same problem, to turn on his hp he press the quickplay button, or gently moves his finger near the top ,over the keyboard, along the volume controls.
Power button doesnt work, the cable underneath to power button, about 4inch x1inch wears out after 2/3 years use.
I uninstalled quickplay, and deleted everything on the quickplay partition,1gig, and now windows xp just loads up.
IT saves going to safe mode all the time.
That partition may hold hp windows recovery files too, but i needed to get rid of quickplay.
COST of replacement cable, 10euro on ebay approx.
RUN FORREST get the hp back, try gently pressing to the right above the keyboard, where volume lights appear.
YOUR hp mobo should be fine, should powerup .

    SEE HERE http://www.notatechguy.com/help-me-fix-my-computer-problems/hp-pavilion-dv6000-fix-sound-quickplay-power-button
it might be possible to delete ,uninstall quickplay, without deleting the hp restore files.

well mine always powered up but all I get is a black screen, no bios loading or anything.
I'll get the laptop back anyway, I'll keep it and have fun taking it apart.

    thanks for all the replies,
my power button seems fine it just wont boot into windows, thats why i thought it might be a software issue, did a repair from an xp disk last night it seems to be working ok now,but for how long? i have had nothing but trouble with this laptop since i got it,i had to send it off under warranty 3 times to get it fixed, one time it needed a new motherboard, bloody nightmare.i just gonna get a new laptop soon and save myself any more frustration.i wot be buying hp again!

I hear ya buddy, I'm done with laptops. I'm going to take the plunge and learn to build my own desktop. I'll make sure there's no HP parts on board;)
