    HI guys,
I'm not sure I understand the fully the NBS.
I read '3's info on it as they are the providers of it.
Is it that they are provinding the minimum 1.2MB speed to people that cannot recieve/ do not have broadband at the moment at all, or..
will now provide me an existing customer with 1.2MBs instead of the ridiculous few KBs that I currently recieve.. its unclear to me.
    Thanks in advance.

In the most rural third of the country they should do that yes. If you are in a big city then no.

however the minimum 1.2Mbps is mythical. It's the same as the rest of 3's Mobile phone network.

It's based on Electoral District boundaries. There is a map, you are either in an NBS ED or not. This can be completely unrelated to if you personally can get broadband as it's based on a threshold of users that notionally or in theory can get some form of Broadband.

You have to apply for the broadband as part of the Broadband scheme, they will test the speed and confirm that it meets the criteria, if not they will provide another solution for the same price. It is limited to certain electorial areas, The maps should be on the three site.

If you're an existing Three customer, then you're more than likely not in an NBS area, as this is only in areas currently without Three mobile phone cover. The 1.2Mbps guarantee is nothing short of a lie though. They simply can't make that promise, but they do anyway.

For someone who knows very little about NBS you were well able to list the mobile numbers of 3 employees and urge people to call them in the night.

If your area is now deemed to be NBS you can call customer care and get them to change your account to an NBS account. Then about 24hrs later when your account is now NBS, you will be able to get on to NBS support and work with them from there in improving your service.

The NBS scheme is a joke, I dont know why the government doesnt invest in Eircom to provide better, solid broadband instead of mobile broaband?

The government should do no such thing. Eircom is a company going under with over 5bn debt. Its infrastructure is falling apart and out dated. If anything the government should invest in a combination of fibre and high grade wireless networks and maintain this as the property if the state and this time around, not sell it off.

The future of Eircom is a very dark place indeed, and I feel for the employees who are caught in the middle.

What I mean is they should take over the infrastructure already laid down by eircom, surely that would make sense instead of starting from scratch!? if eircom go bust whats the point in letting all that years of infrastructure go to waste? kinda like all them ghost estates, whats the pint in demolishing them there built already!

Sadly they can';t provide any minimum speed as they can't control contention, so they can't guarantee a set speed like with ADSL

Yes eircom have debt but the gov's decision to choose Three for the NBS was extremely foolish, what Three are offering is not suitable as Broadband. Even Ireland Off-Line would have prefered Eircom to be chosen over Three.

Eircom was going to use Meteor for most of it. But their satellite would have been better.
