Broken Key

My girlfriend was driving her audi today and her key snapped in the ignition. It's the silver part that is broken. The black bit is fine. Its one of those flip keys. Just have a few questions. Would this cause the immobiliser to kick in and cut out the engine? Is the silver part the same on all keys or is it uniques to the car? Can the silver part be replaced without having to get the car coded? How much would it cost?

E bay is the cheapest place to get them. Im 90% sure the silver piece is the same and wont affect the immobilizer. I had an old passat and the same thing happened

Ebay isn't really an option. No spare key in the meantime.

Hi, 15 yrs experience in a VW/AUDI dealership. If the car was older than 04 it would be possible that a key code could be attained by ringing the main dealer in Dublin, providing a chassis number and getting one of the guys in the workshop to cut a blade for you which would cost approx 15euro. This would generally work for an older car if you had just locked your keys in it, you could use a vice scrips to hold the blade in place and unlock the door. The fact however that the key is broken and it is also a flip key means you will definitely have to order a new key. Depending on the year of the car you may be able to order just a plain key that you will have to get coded in and that will cost you 120 including the coding. You will unfortunately have to get the car towed to the garage and wait approx twenty mins for this. Again depending on the year of the Audi it may not be possible to get the ordinary key, all that may be available for that yr is the flick key which will cost you 220 including vat and coding... Hope this helps.

The FOB is fine. Its just the silve key part. The top of it snapped off. It shouldn't need to be coded for that should it? Can you not just replace that part?

If it's the type of Key I think it is, the top part (with the flip key usually attached) just pulls off, and you should be able to get that part from Audi fairly cheap. It will need to be cut to your car though.

Both Audi and VW garages told me the car would need to be towed to the garage for a new key to be coded. €220 plus towing fee. Rang that fella in dunboyne and he was able to replace the blade for €40 and didn't need the car to be brought. I think this is very bad on the part of the dealers. They clearly tried to rip me off and told blatant lies. I wonder how many people they get with this scam. Is there anyone they can be reported to for this?
