    Hey OP,
Firstly relax !...The picolax needs time to do its job. I would not worry about not having a bowel movement especially if you stomach is empty. The Prep-K, Okay, follow the instructions, having it ice cold kills the taste a wee bit but not that much, but struggle through, the cleaner you are inside the better view your doc can get, believe me i have being having scopes since i was 15 (Am 33).

Best of luck with the scope, the drug are great so you should really remember much although if you do wake up, it is like a cosy dream.

I had a colonoscopy last October and was expecting an awful day prior to the test, while preparing with Picolax etc.

It did take a while to "get going" from what I remember and the effects were nothing like I had expected, very moderate in my experience.

I thought that I might have needed more prep, because I had this expectation of spending all day locked in the toilet and feeling sick. Maybe different people have different experiences (I am thankfully in very good health) but I think it is not going to be as bad as you think.

Best of luck. ( I will be offline for a few hours but will be happy to respond to anything else later on)

Klen prep isn't that bad, it's the first few sups that are the worst. You get used to it after the first glass. I took 4 litres in 2 hours, I'm sure 3 would have been sufficeint. It sure works anyway!

Colonoscopy is less painful than an endoscopy down. honestly. theyre not that bad, once you have drank the klean Prep, that's 2/3rds of the work done.

Lads...Stop fretting!! It's normally just a half day job, with little hassle. I found the worst was the day before, having taken the picolax. That wasn't too bad in itself....the most troublesome aspect was being unable to eat - fasting, like. I'm normally on a "See Food" diet - see food, eat food - so it was 'hardship' not eating!

The procedure was a doddle!

    Fast for a day.

    Drink the prep.

Sit on the loo for the day.

    Liquid comes out of you.

Drink plenty of fluids - water, 7up, stock cubes - anything clear.

Gp to bed & sleep. Have weird dreams about brie. Maybe that's just me.

    Wake up.

    Go to hospital.

    Get a sedative.

    Fall into a daze.

Get a finger up your bum. Then a tube.

Remember very little. Small bit of cramping.

    Get tube out of bum.

    Fart.

    Up to the ward.

    Tea and toast.

    Home time.

    Sorted.

Another thing that nobody might tell you is this..
If you get too many sedatives during the procedure like i did.. (4 times they zapped me with sedatives) you lose control of your functions.. so dont be surprised if you wake up being wheeled back to a ward in a puddle of what used to be kleenprep..

Never in my life was i so embarassed getting out of a bed.

The good news is, i got a diagnosis about two weeks after the scope and it was the end of a grueling 2 years of tests :)

They leave a plastic nappy/sheet thing under you for these moments ;)

The 2 times I got it done I didn't feel anything. In fact I was surprised when I was told afterwards that I didn't get a full anaesthetic, just a sedative. To me they felt like the same thing. I was out withing seconds and didn't wake up for a good while after the procedure.

Nothing to worry about at all. I was relieved to get INTO the hospital as it meant that the procedure was going to be done soon and I could eat something after it!

No pain or discomfort whatsoever. Wouldn't have known anyone or anything was up my bum if I didn't know that I was getting a colonoscopy done.

What?! Were you semi-conscious or what? How did you know that you were getting sedatives? I was out for the count as far as I was concerned. ON both occasions. Different hospitals/doctors too.

It's fine honestly, having all of mine done when I was a 18year old girl, I should have dramatised conclusions of what they were like, but they were'nt bad. It's all done very tasteful, like your not whipping your arse out on the ward or anything.
the few times I had them done, I was in and out of Beaumont in a matter of hours. they wait until you're awake enough to eat tea and toast then you're on your way.
I heard of people saying that because it's not general anesthetic, you can feel and remember some things too. But I have had about 6 done and don't remember a thing from any of them.

the worst part about it is that stupid prep drink and no food. apart form that it is fine.
I did wak eup during one of mine and moaned a bit and they immediately gave me more sedative and off to sleep again.

Do they put you to sleep or is that your choice?
Also do they check your prostate while there inside their?:o

No, that's a separate check. The prostate exam is done manually - with a gloved finger. It's pretty subjective and experience counts. My first Urologist couldn't feel anything, while my second opinion guy found the tumour. The DRE (digital rectal exam) is no big deal....I don't like it, but hell, if it might save your life, so what - it saved my life!

i dont know actually. all of mine i have slept straight away, I do know people who had it done in a different hospital and they kept them awake......they still did not feel anything though.
Its nothing to be worried about, more of an inconvenience than anything.

    Hey all :)

I had the colonoscopy 2 years ago in Mount Carmel. I had the choice of sedation or full anaesthetic. I took the anaesthetic. Was very straight forward. I have no memory of the actual procedure. Also the staff were just lovely.

I am getting a colonoscopy and OGD done three weeks tomorrow, at the moment it looks like I wont have an escort or someone to collect me, anyone know what protocol is in a situation like that, also what kind of time frame will this take over the course of the day, do they do both at the same time, one after the other in quick succession or are they done hours apart. Sorry for the many questions, thanks in advance.

    Hi again,

I have a weak constitution and am dreading the moviprep. Any recommendations to make the prep easier?

Can you drink it with miwadi?

    Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭rugbug86

    Moviprep.

Its 2 sachets, A and B. They're to be mixed in 1 litre of water. For some preps you need to have a second dose - another 2 sachets in another litre of water.

My main advice is to make it up well in advance of when you need it and put it in the fridge. When you're drinking it, add ice cubes if you want. The colder it is the easier it is to drink. Well that's what I found anyway!

I wouldn't recommend adding in anything to the litre glass - I take a derivative of moviprep on a daily basis (sachet A) and I added some orange mi wadi to it and it made it taste like disprin. I also added blackcurrent ribena to it and it tasted like salty blackcurrant, so try maybe one glass of it with a bit of miwadi and see how you like the taste.

For me, the first few glasses went down easy - towards the end of the bottle it was getting increasingly difficult to swallow.

Make sure you drink plenty of other clear fluids too - 7up, water, black tea & coffee, I even drank an oxo cube (chicken) for the salty craving.

Don't plan anything for the day of the prep - you will need to be near the loo a good chunk of it. Make sure you've a book/laptop to hand also. If you've only one toilet in the house, send the family out for the day!

If you have any kind of sedation/anaesthetic you will have to be escorted home. If you opt for no sedation, off ya pop on your own.

Can I just say for anyone who is taking picolax/movi or kleen prep.. You dont need to completely starve for the day of preparation. Obviously stay away from anything with fibre so no brown bread etc. Stay away from heavy/stodgy foods like potatoes/meat/pasta. jelly and ice cream is a great filler, as is a few poached/boiled eggs or a nice soup (so long as its not creamy). And your prep can be mixed with cordial. Hope that helps a little.

I found Klean-Prep a real chore, couldn't get used to it. The vast majority are able to power through though. Mixing it with apple juice helped a bit, holding my nose also. I only managed 1+ 1/4 sachets and that was fine, no issues with scope. (I am under 8 stone). But really I don't think anyone reallly needs 4 sachets, 3 is pushing it for most. No need to panic if you don't finish the whole entire dose.

I was feeling extremely rotten from fasting (because have no reserves!) and found that by far the worst aspect, especially since it wasn't actually done until 2pm next day. I panicked and begged to be totally knocked out, which they did. So I remember absolutely nothing and woke up coming back into the ward thinking they hadn't bothered to do the gastroscopy, only the colonoscopy! Tea and toast, out the door, absolutely no bad feeling afterwards or any side effects at all. Procedure itself an absolutel blip. Really just the fasting sucked, and the Klean Prep can be a challenge. Nothing to get worked up over though.

    Hi,
Am going for my second gastroscopy & colonoscopy next week. Have been prescribed Picolax because the last time I was incredibly sick when I attempted to take Klean Prep - I literally vomited after each mouthful (which was very difficult as I was a full-time carer for a very sick loved one at the time and was attempting to put on a brave face). I've heard that it is incredibly important to drink as much water as possible the day before you take the prep as well as the day of. Has anyone else had problems with vomiting the solution up immediately after drinking it?
