It is highly unlikely that we would ever do this for externally hosted images.

    The options are:
    1. For every time someone links to an external image, a boards.ie machine would download it, examine it and record the size data for it. We don't have enough spare capacity to do this I'm afraid, and it would murder performance on posting.
    2. Play games with Javascript to scale the images on each page view. Downsides:
      • Render time on photo threads goes through the roof.
      • The images would only "resize" part way through the page load.
    3. When people upload or link to enormous pictures, just edit their post and tell them not to do it again.

(I'm assuming for the sake of argument that The Holy War on Image Sizes and the Maximum Value Thereof had been fought to a conclusive finish.)

My money's still on option 3 though.

Also, options 1, 2 and the CSS option mentioned in the thread you linked to don't solve the issue of image file size. Images with large dimensions typically are large in file size. Even if we did force them to no more than 800 pixels wide, people would still have to download the entire image and that kills page performance and irritates users.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
