Are nukes not illegal?

    Obama just won that Nobel peace prize right. And he is spending 3.1 billion this year on more nukes. Has he seen what one does. These aren't little baby nukes like Hiroshima or Nagosaki. These are a hundred times more powerful. Can some1 please stop people doing this. Nukes can only lead to bad things. I don't care if all humans die particularly, but i want life to continue for other things at least. Its a bloody joke. Any thoughts people? Well i just really needed to write this down before i broke something.

    Unilateral disarmament is insane, especially so if the US does it alone. What do you think prevented the US and the Soviet Union coming to all out war during the Cold War? The world is full of bad people, the responsible thing to do is to limit who can have these awesome weapons, and limit the amount of them so the odd one doesn't go 'missing'. Obama is committed to gradual scaling down of Nuclear weapons, but a part of that policy will be a new generation of weapons.

    People need to stop living in this make believe CND world. The world is bad.

    how does the scaling down of nukes cohere with developing more nukes? The problem isn't nukes, its the people who decided it would be a good idea to gift them to the world and then the people whose political ideologies and agendas somehow justify mass murder or extinction.

    He's allocated 3.1 billion to nuclear security, not building new nukes.

    I did mean all countrys, Britains budget for nukes is outragous aswell. Why thousands though, surely twenty is plenty for any country. And would cause the stalemate that has kept everywhere safe for as long as it has. Even having them made is dangerous, If something like disease, geological events, ateroid where to kill alot of the population. There would be a hell of alot of unatended nukes and untrained personnel. The risk or contamination is high. And security means means making new bombs, yes? What do you do with the nuclear waste of the outdated ones. Oh yeah, thats right we don't know.

    Well any country like the USA that has the capability of launching from submarines, bombers and missle silo/sites will not limit itself to such a small number of nukes.

    err... if you had done more than 0.5 of a nanno-seconds worth of research before coming to this - i'm sure - hugely valuable opinion, you would know that the US has little interest in big nukes, but rather has a great deal of interest in very small nukes - nukes of between 0.5 and 5kt.

    why?

    because nukes of that size are actually useful - in that one can use them and not end the world.

    almost none of the money that Obama is spending on 'nuclear security' is being spent on weapons per se, rather systems for securing Pakistan's nukes, systems for detecting radiological weapons, and systems to help mitigate the long term radiological effect of nuclear weapons.

    holding a 'nukes are bad, m'kay' opinion is entirely valid, but you do the case of such a viewpoint no favours whatsoever by making utterly unresearched claims, and having no understanding of policy - even if you disagree with it.
