Wireless Apple Keyboard & Mouse sleep problems

I got the wireless apple keyboard and Magic mouse on Monday, when I'm not on my Mac it is just asleep so I turn the keyboard off and then I put the Mac to sleep and then switch the Mouse off but then the Mac will come back on and say connection lost with the mouse, do I have to leave the mouse on at all times or is there a way around it. At the moment the Mouse has 98% battery and the keyboard is 100%, I know it is only 2% but it shouldn't go down so fast should it?

Turn the mouse and keyboard off first, then put the Mac to sleep using the power button.
