Got a new iphone 3gs just over two weeks ago. Once I got over the initial hurdle of where the bloody hell the sim went:o its been pretty much plain sailing....until now that is!

I was checking my email (GMAIL is case that makes a difference) this morning and whilst turning the phone from portrait to landscape the screen went black except for the "service bar" at the top. I know its connecting and downloading the email fine but its still black. Every other app is fine in that the screen is perfect. Any ideas (or have I just done something very stupid)? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

you haven't done anything wrong. This issue is localised only to your email app? What app are you using for email ?

    Hey fat fingers,
Just the standard app that it comes with....havent installed anything else for email purposes. The only other apps that Ive installed really are photography related and shouldnt be posing any probs.

Is yours an official iPhone? No Jailbreak etc?

I have the same issue. It appears to be a intermittent firmware bug in 3.1.2 and 3.1.3. Happens in iPod mode as well. Its nothing to be too worried about. Just annoying.

Its an official one... on vodafone. How can I determine the firmware version?

Have checked it every hour or so and its still having this issue. Should I chuck it back at them or can I download another app instead... what would you guys recommend?

you could download other app and try it but if its still under warranty it would not hurt to ask Apple for resolution or replacement..

I am going to suggest the obvious! Reboot the phone!
Hold down the on/off button at the top for 5 seconds, then slide the slider on screen to turn off.
Once its fully off (little whirly thing gone) turn it back on and try again.
If issue is still there, i would reinstall the firmware in itunes.
