World War Z ... on audio book!

About 1/4 the way through and loving it. The audio experience is extremely evocative ... if you see some gal with headphones flipping out on the bus cos someone tapped her shoulder, that'll be me :pac:

For those who don't know the book, it's structured as a set of personal accounts of survival of a zombie apocalypse from various people around the globe, eye witnesses from all walks of life telling their own stories. The narrators are (for the most part) good actors and all of the stories so far are intriguing, disturbing and, at times, quite moving.

As with the Zombie Survival Guide, Brooks melds reality and fantasy in such balanced measurements as to make each account highly believable. His social observations are relevant, his criticisms very thinly disguised. :)

However the Random House "publication" is unfortunately very poor with no "track" listings ... basically a box with some CDs in it :(

For those who've already read it, what was your favourite chapter?

I found the Iran/Pakistan conflict and Israel's reaction to the outbreak fascinating stuff, T. Sean's description of the "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here" fiasco is darkly comic and chilling and the massacre at the ship breakers yard was horrifying.:(

Got it, liked it but its an abridged version.

Its missing a few chapters from the book.

The Russian evacuation chapter. You really have to be in awe at the brilliant horror of their tactics.

Also the chapter about the American pilot who had to bail out. "Metz fan"

    That was well done alright.

Loved the bit where the Chinese missile sub sat on the ocean floor to try and evade the hunter killer sub that was pursuing it.... only to realise that the undead were crawling all over the hull.

    On the ocean floor.

    Creepy.

The German officer has just described how his superior threatened to prosecute him (and his men) "with Russian efficiency" ... I get the idea.

But as much as I'm loving the audio book experience, I think I'll invest in a copy of the book as well at some stage.

Now playing: Cannibalism in Canada

OK, I thought he was referring to what happened in Russia, implying arbitrary executions and such. Definitely going for the book! :)

Not finished myself yet but the audiobook is abridged so it's possible it's not there. I'll be interested to see what was left out when I compare the book to the audiobook later.

you have got to get the book

even the order of the stories has a natural progression and takes you from the outbreak right through the panic to the end of the war

just finished reading it for the 2nd time - masterpiece

In fairness the audio book does the natural progression thing too but yes, it's been firmly established, I need to get the book :)

Anyway , I've finished it and I thought it was brilliant. "Metz Fan" is there but the Russian Evacuation and the Chinese Missile Sub incident are not. I missed not being able to refer back to chapters but at the end of the day actually listening to these characters was a great experience.

It's not on the audio book.

    It's a very abridged version.
I love Henry Rollins as the bodyguard. When i heard his voice it just fit.

Very good Casting from Alan Alda to Mark Hamill.

And a nice selection of the stories form the book.
The one with the guy who ended up at the ship breakers Yard is amazing.

I loved it too. I listened to it while working in a room on my own, I work in the Natural History Museum which is creepy at the best of times.
I actually scared the bejezzus out of myself with it. The chapter on yonkers? Argh!

    If you need me, I'll be locking myself into a storage cupboard with a crowbar. ;_;
