Plenty have fought in cages, i think we have some ring fighters too and might even have some matted area fighters, do you want us to count only "cage fighters" though?

Not sure about the amount of "cage fighters" but there are alot of mixed martial artists.

If you're doing a project on MMA in Ireland and you want it to be good then don't look for short cuts by posting on boards. Go to the source, go to gyms and speak to the coaches and fighters, contact promoters etc.

Don't be looking for help for your project. If you want it to be good and in any way respectable, put in the hard work and research the topic properly. It will pay dividends if you do.

Not all are MMA clubs but have a look and most have links to the clubs website who should have their own fighter details,

sorry for my ignorance but something doesnt seem right to me...

    1. you don't really seem to have any idea of the Irish MMA scene (this is not a terrrible sin but if your picking a project then wouldn't it make sense to choose something your familar in or have knowledge on?)

    2. Your looking for some starting information to begin a project and its already May, personally would have thought thats a bit late to begin a college project, most colleges are beginning exams within the next few weeks (indeed we began this week!)

I'm probably completely wrong and this is a genuine post, but thats what it looked like to me...

btw best of luck with your project

There is no membership requirement or governing body to be affiliated to in Mixed Martial Arts, thus, it is very difficult to estimate the exact number of active fighters. You can divide up MMA fighters into 3 basic groups -
Amateur (those that compete solely in the MMA league, fight under D/E rules, train few times a week at most (usually))
Professional (those that compete in big shows under A or B class rules, for a purse and train full time (twice a day)).
Semi-pro (those that lie somewhere in between, may train a lot and compete at C class rules and do not receive a purse).

The above is just a gross division and may not suit everyone. So in your report you need to decide whether you concentrate only on 'Professional' fighters or everybody.

If you want to estimate the number of Amateur fighters you could look up the mmaleague website http://mmaleagueco.web133.discountasp.net/Default.aspx and count the number of different fighters for 2010. If you asked nicely, Mark Leonard may tell you the average number of guys fighting per year in his mma league and this would be a good estimate.

If you want to know how many professional fighters there are, you could find results for all shows in the last year (or 3 years or 10 years etc.) and count the number of guys that fought at A or B class rules. You could email every trainer/coach/promoter and ask for a list of current/previous fighters but i don't know how many would get back to you.

Tell me what the project is about and what course it's for and I'll gladly help as long as I think you're not taking the piss.
