No log tables this year

For all doing math, applied math and statistics, got this email this morning
For the attention of students taking MA, MS, AM, ST and FMAS
modules in the summer examinations 2010.

The booklet of Log Tables will NOT be available to students
sitting School of Mathematical Sciences modules in the
    summer examinations this year.

If any formulae or tables are needed, these are included in
or attached to the School examination papers.

Statistics tables and Actuarial tables WILL be provided by
the Examinations Office to students as necessary at summer
    examinations this year.

    SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

Guess the new log tables were cost too much to provide. A bit cheeky IMO because they really left it to the last moment to tell us. I know it says that they will provide us with the formulas or tables but sometimes the tables have that extra info that can be over looked.

Got that email as well, not happy with it at all! Pretty sure we were told that we'd be getting the formulas on the exam sheet a while ago, but I'd still prefer to have the log tables!

It is my bible. Did not need another worry before my calculus or mechanics exams. This email is only from the math department but I presume the same goes for science.

Engineering dept was told maybe a fortnight ago. I don't think it's the cost, more that the new tables give way more formulae so it'd make it easier for people. Wish they'd just held onto the old ones and continued giving us them.

I bought the new log tables this year and it took me ages to find all the formulas I needed but there wasn't that much difference in them. More like one log book for science and engineering and statistics. If there were that many new formulas added then maybe the curriculum should have been changed for our courses.

Anyway some log tables would be better than none. :(

I don't know how the Department of Education failed to realise that producing new log tables would be problematic for college students. I don't think I'll need them for any of my exams, but they're handy for double checking trig identities or differential/integral identites so it's a pain in the ass.

You'll get two pages of stuff, basically pages 8/9 of the old log tables and all the integration stuff, including the formulas, but its attached to the back of the exam paper

Yeah, that really screwed us over in our first exam. The lecturer didn't really take into account that we wouldn't have log tables. Gave us a bastard of an equation to integrate twice. Seriously needed the trig identities to solve it all. Seriously f(x,y)=cos(x)cos(y)cos(x-y) and we needed to get f'(x,y)=0. We were not happy students, especially when he promised an easy equation

Dima Rachinskii, he always came across as so nice but now we all know he's really mean at heart.
