Recommend BMW Auto-Box Mechanic

    Hey Guys,

Has anyone got any good recommendations for an independent BMW mechanic that is good with auto boxes and would also have the software to read fault codes and that? I'm based in dublin but would literally drive anywhere to get a good one, as far as Newry or anything.

I have a 2001 e46 that has started to go a bit loopy and from reading other forums im panicking that it may turn into a complete failure. When i start the car for the first set of gear changes, 1-2-3-4, it revs way way higher than normal for about the last week. after this first set of gear changes the ratios all go back to normal. yesterday i was driving it and ive now convinced myself that its revving even higher again so am getting worried. I cant put it into manual steptronic mode because that hasnt worked since i bought it (another long story).

Its done 74k so i was wondering as well whether to go ahead and change the "lifetime" transmission fluid? theres seems to be a bit of split decision on this on the specialist forums, have any of you ever done it? would the mechanic do it or would i have to beg him to do it, i read that some of them dont even want to do it.

    Any help is appreciated!
    Cheers,
    J.

Do it, the problem isn't going to go away unless you get it sorted.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I was talking to Fergus in Conways and he was very very helpful. He told me to get in touch with Seamus in Greenmount motors first as he thinks that because it is only happening first thing in the morning that it may be the mass flow meter telling the engine to rev higher than normal. He said I should get his checked out first as there are no warning lights on the dash which he said there would be if there was something really badly wrong with it. he also said that if it turns out not to be the mass flow meter that it could need a software upgrade.

I got talking to the lads in greenmount and they are going to take a look friday, they didnt sound too convinced but they are going to plug it in to see what the faults are. Its only 20 quid for a diagnostic too which I thought was a good price.

I'll let yous know how i get on!
