The producers of ABC's hit drama have shot so much crucial material for the show's hugely anticipated series finale that the network has agreed to extend the last episode by an extra half hour.

When the "Lost" finale airs on Sunday, May 23rd, the episode will run from 9 to 11:30 p.m. The overrun will air instead of the local news, with the "Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost" post-finale special remaining at 11:30 p.m. ABC is expected to announce the plan on tonight's episode of Kimmel.

Good news, although I wish they just made it a 3-parter like it should have been. This half hour obviously includes ads.

Yeah 3 hours is an apt amount for the finale of a show of this magnitude, especially considering the amount of ad breaks but sure thats still awesome news:D

Gonna Sky Plus it on the thursday then watch it directly after so can skip all the ads and get a bag of cans and immerse.

Any extra Lost is good news. Hopefully a few more answers anyway.

so am i right in saying the finale will be roughly an hour and 50 minutes long?

Great news to hear there is more lost anyway

however long it airs for, it will probably only "feel" like 45-50 mins,

This is great news. Any extra amount of time we have to say Goodbye to one of the greatest shows on television will never be enough. But hopefully the extra half hour will do it justice.

I know after ad breaks there will probably be only about 2 hours of actual show time but it's sll good.

    Sounds to me suspiciously like
    a) they've read the relentless criticism of this season
    b) taken on board the negative feedback regarding comments they made about how much explanation they owe us regarding mysteries/questions from previous seasons
and c) done an emergency (and probably sloppy) rewrite to give us a few more convoluted and illogical answers in the hope it'll stop the audience stringing them up.

I wouldn't say there was any rewriting at this late stage. More down to the editing I rekon.

They finished writing about a month ago. And they finished editing the finale on Tuesday. It's all done. The only thing happening now is special effects, sound, etc.

Would be brilliant if they showed the finale in the cinema so you could fully appreciate the whole sound effects and stuff.

Yes but have any events being run in Ireland. Anyone know of any plans to stage it at any venue?

Oh yeah, could we petition a cinema to show it?

They wouldnt be allowed to show it in a cinema (afaik). I was invited to a friends house to watch it with a load of people, but i think i want to watch it one my own tbh. Watch it, then watch it again, then sit in the dark and think about it :P

Yes would think the copyright rules probably forbid that but would love to see that finale on a big screen as it would be a huge cinematic experience.

Given that we can't even convince RTE to show it a couple of days earlier, I don't fancy our chances.

yea would be major copyright issues and I couldn't see a venue bothered with the effort. But some imaginative business person should really have tried at least to coerce something for this.

Although as said Ild probably rather watch it 1st on my own then in a big session.

Can't see there being copyright issues as long as you are paying commercial rates to your TV provider. After all you can show live TV in a pub & charge entry if you wish.
You may have to be a little less direct about what you are charging for. But I don't see a problem if everything about the venue is above board.

I have rewatched a number of times in between series. Its amazing how different things are when you know what we know now.

Im debating whether to watch it again. But may move on. Dont think Ill invest that much time with any series again.
    Ending better be worth it.

Watching the entire 6 seasone would be a big commitment, I agree. Pick an episode at random, you will be amazed at what you pick up on.

Well pubs pay a higher premium and rate for their tv subscriptions than normal consumer use so yes I would see there being some issue in an un-licenced venue putting this on a big screen unless they get the permission from ABC/RTE

Yes i think they are very strict on that. Permission would be needed.

But if you hired a licenced establishment or anywhere with a commercial subscription can't see what the problem would be.

If permission is granted there is no problem. But always look at the copyright notice at tend of dvds and they also say stuff like it cant be shown in prisons or stuff like that for some reason.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 24,789 Mod ✭✭✭✭KoolKid

You would not need permission if you are paying the likes of Sky for a commercial licence, that covers public viewing.
Do you think your local is writing to SKY every night theres a match on???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

Yeah. Either way Ill be watching it at home. Sunday a terrible day to be watching it though. Much prefere the new slot

Obviously not but your missing the point. we were talking about non-normal public viewing ie a cinema showing it or a music venue setting up a big screen.

Its still possible. Maybe contact a number of cinemas & see what thier position would be.
Its very possible you would find a location that has a commercial Sky installation.

So what's the story? What time is it on in Ireland? Are they airing it everywhere at the same time? If so it will be on at like 2.30am Monday morning.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 24,789 Mod ✭✭✭✭KoolKid

The plan was to air everywhere at the same time. But I doubt it will happen like that.

That's up to RTE. The chances of them doing so are slim. It will most likely be left in its usual slot on a Thursday.
