Hooking iMac to TV with Audio

Si I want to hook up my iMac 24" to my TV, I was going to buy a mini display port to VGA and then get another VGA to VGA to hook the two screens up so the picture is sorted I think!

It is the audio that I get confused with!
If I were to get a RCA stereo splitter like this

    CABLE-Audio-Y-Splitter-2-RCA-Females-to-1-3-5mm-Male-IEC-M7401.jpg

Or could I use this instead of the splitter and cables

and a set of RCA to RCA cables like these

    rca3.jpg

and then hook one end of the cables to the TV (excluding the yellow) and the other end to the splitter, which I would then plug into the 3.5mm headphone jack!

Do you think this would work properly? and also if it were to work and each time I wanted to listen to music on iTunes through the computer would I have to disconnect the splitter?

Sorry if I didn't explain it good enough!

    Thanks.

    Yep, either way should work.

    Yes.

I think I'm right in saying that the iMac's headphone port also doubles as an optical port, so that's another option.

Does that mean I could get a 3 way splitter and have the yellow cable plugged in and just plug the yellow cable directly into the TV too so there would be no need for a mini display port or vga cables

No. The headphone out doesn't carry audio.

Minidisplay port for the video, headphone/lineout for the audio.
