Hi Dee, we have been to Ruka in Finland twice and although not quite in the Artic Circle, it is classified as being Lapland. We went in 2008 & 2009. We found the best way for us was to use Crystal Ski out of Gatwick or Manchester. We went for a week and it was the same price as these mad 2/3 trips out of Dublin. Now, I do have to say, on our first trip our children were 8 & 10.

We are also skiers and thats why we wanted to go for a week. We went in Feb & March. Believe it or not, Crystal ski organised a Santa trip in Feb, I know it sounds a bit mad but it was great (BTW Crystal not doing lapland this year, only Inghams are). It was a super day, we drove for about 40 minutes from Ruka to a fab frozen lake, where the rep produced sleds for the kids to play on, next thing was two elves appeared and asked could they join in !!! and they got the kids 'going' by asking them did they know that santa lived nearby and was on his holidays.....Then you cld hear Santa calling the Elves for lunch and of course the elves asked could their new Irish friends come too ! I could go on and on, but it was magical, up to this fab log cabin we went and spent over an hour with santa, and Mrs Claus was there too and the kids baked cookies with her.....

I could go on and on - we loved the place - we also did Huskey dog trips and of course skiing. We paid £1,200 for the 4 of us last year and that was for flights, transfers and accommodation. I know that Espirit is another reputable company that does Lapland trips along with Neilsons. If you want to DIY, you could go the route you suggested for fly to Manchester and fly up with Finnair to various locations. We had planned to go again this year but of course Ryanair pulled out of Tampere, but looking into DIY'ing for 2011 at the mo.
