new irons-- any advice?

Ok i'm looking for a bit of advice.

I'd like to get a new set of irons. I play off a handicap of 12 but am hoping to get to around 8 by end of year. Have been playing a lot recently and noticing a big improvement in my scores. with further time and dedication i think i should achieve my goal.

But i think a new set of irons would help me too. At present i have a very well worn set of King cobra oversize from approx 1995/1996. So its time for change. I'm sure that the modern improvements in irons should help as the set i have are approx 15 years old, i'm sure standards have improved in that time period.

But my problem is what to buy?

I'd like to get a good 2nd hand set rather than buy new.
    Steel shaft-regular flex
    4-PW ideally
My budget would be in the region of €200 to €250

I've read so much online that i've actually become confused.

So could anyone recommend what they think may suit me and what would be a good choice for me moving forward? If you need to ask any more questions about my game etc please do. any help would be appreciated

Would hit a 6 iron about 155 yards

What you should do is arrange for a fitting with a good pro. I dont know where you are but real good golf shops have mini driving ranges. They should be able to establish what is the best iron for you then go off and buy 2nd hand. A good shop will tape the head and the idea is when you hit the ball it will leave a mark. This is quite good and eventually you will find an iron that is properly balanced and the right fit. the mark will be dead centre. Your handicap will be 6 in no time.

    go here

Also hire clubs of different makes. A full round of golf is the real test.

Few Nike sets going for that kind of money on all the usual websites at the moment. Cast CCi's, Sumo's and Slingshot's etc.You could probably get a set of Mizuno Mx-100's for in and around that kind of money too. After that it'd probably be slim pickin's for less than 250 to be honest.Taylormade r7's and Tour Burner irons for around 300 on most of the sites, they all tend to be similar price-wise.The above advice is good though if you're serious about lowering your handicap, fitting is the way to go.

Id go to a pro first & get a look over on your set up at address. When everything looks good then go get fitted & buy second hand. Cant go wrong
with mizuno, titleist or taylor made.

Lovely set of Taylor Made tp forged here & here.

For a decent 2nd hand set have a look here and filter by price http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/clubtype/3/iron_sets.html.
Sets like Mizuno MX-23, Ping I5, Cobra FP, TaylorMade R7 should be within your price range.

Sorry to hijack but is this expensive? Am currently playing off a high handicap but getting lessons and my swing is really starting to come together, only using a cheap starter set of clubs so think this really would improve me but its hard to justify spending more money as I've just paid for lessons as well as joining a society and trying to play rounds weekley as well.

Have King Cobra Oversize. the older model, from around 1995 so think its time for an upgrade as they are well worn

has anyone played with Mizuno MX-20 irons? They'd be a few years old now. Saw a set cheap on the net...

If the MX-20s are in good nick I'd recommend them highly. I used a set of them from mid 2002 until the end of 2006. In 2003 I went from 6 to 3 handicap using them. Top class stick in my opinion, plenty forgiving but don't look too ugly IMO.

    My tuppence worth anyway...

would they be ok for someone around the 12/13 handicap range?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,939 ✭✭✭Russman

    Absolutely they would.

I saw a second hand set in a pro shop recently and they were looking for €100 for the set, so that should give you an idea of the price of them now. I sold my own set through Adverts.ie about a month ago as it happens, and also got €100.

If your budget is a little higher you might pick up later models i.e. MX23, MX25 or MX200. Even the MX200 is around two years old now so the prices should be reasonable enough.

    +1

If your not looking to spend a fortune, pick yourself a set of MX-20s or MX-23's.

are the MX-23 the newer version of the MX-20?

Go to mcguirks at the kinsealy grange driving range and try out some irons there might help you to get a feel of different shaft flex and so on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭aster99

was reading a few reviews online, seem to suggest that the MX-23 was not as easy to hit as the MX-20

Hi aster99, I have a set of MX25s for sale if you're interested. The only reason I'm changing them is that they are a regular shaft and I need a stiff shaft and have bought a set of AP2s. If interested let me know and I can arrange for you to try them out if that suits.
