    Hi all.

Im on the JSA about a year now. I got a letter today telling me to head in for an interview in "accordance with the National Employment plan".
They tell me I will be offered support to consider job vacancies and the range of training courses that are available. Can someone please tell me what this interview will entail? Like will they just say "oh theres a job in cork in a factory if you dont take it you wont be entitled to sign on anymore". I know its not the time to be picky but I dont want to just work anywhere away from my home and id also much prefer to work at something im qualified in.And will they just force me to do a course that I might not have any interest in? After a good few months of searching for work in my area admitedly I have lost heart the last few months but im now worried ill be pushed into some random place.:(

If you are a brain surgeon, they are unlikely to demand that you work in a corner shop or start a course to become a blocklayer.

I imagine the interview is partly formulaic, but also to see where you are at the moment, e.g have you been able to pick up any temporary work, are you seeing an advertising for jobs that suit your skills, etc.

That said, doing a course might be useful if you are finding that you have lost heart - you could do something that would be useful in any job, e.g. office skills or computing.

Its just a way to help long term unemployed to get back into work. If you need training or other help finding a job they will organise this for you. They are just trying to help you out not trick you into a dodgey job. They wont force you into anything but you do need to be making an effort tofind work or retrain.

If you havent been able to get work in your own field in the last 2 years and its unlikely you will get anything soon then maybe it is time to consider a move to a different market.

My advice is to look up college courses find one you are interested in and apply for that. It is a bit late but they may be able to help you. I was in construction and now im going doing a college course that couldnt be further from construction.

Just as a matter of interest: I have spent the last 2 months putting together my back-to-work plan, and I intend going before the Local Partnership with it soon.

Would that impress the Dept. of Social Welfare, vis a vis jobskeeking and the like?

This business plan promises to pay me a lot more than any job I could hope to secure in the morning, I can tell you that much for openers.

It is basically an import-export idea.

I too have been unemployed for around 1 year, and if I lose the JSA before i get onto the BTWE scheme then I would be ineligible for the scheme, which would be a real blow, seeing as I have invested so much into it.

I think this is a way for them to cut the live register, threathen your dole if u dont take a job or course and when your on a course your not offically on the live register thus the more ppl on courses the less ppl on the live register and the better it looks wen the government are able to say "the number of ppl on the live register is dropping, recession over"

A friend of mine got the same letter a few weeks back - don't worry... It's basically to help you get off the dole, or at least get a view on what you want to do...
My friend had intervioews and a councellor helpin him decide what he's like to do based on his qualifications & interests and he's lookin into courses right now...
you've nothin to worry about unless you're tryin to stay on the dole and do nothin...
