I have booked Aer Lingus Dublin to Lanzarote in 2 weeks, today I got an Email asking if I would like to book our seats for only €5 each way!
How does this work? If I dont book a seat online will I have to pay anyway when I use the self service check in?

    nope

just wait till the day before and you can check in and choose your seats for free online.

reserving your seat in advance is only any use in case like you are looking to guarantee being at the front of the plane or want a seat in an emergency row that has more legroom.

EDIT: checking in using the machines or desk is also free with aer lingus. They are not ryanair. Thy'd be a different company.

I usually check in online as soon as possible, that way you get a good selection of seats.

it's really just a way to get money off people who are picky and want to be guaranteed of where they'll sit. personally, i paid the extra to get an exit row seat but that's just because i have chronic ankle/hip/lower back pain and i need leg-room.

bottom line is that if you don't choose a seat they can't charge you anything and one will be automatically assigned to you.......just like the good old days

I got a similar email yesterday, it says my seat has not been booked for the return flight, and I did ages ago. Is AL trying to get more money? Well, of course it is...

Didn't know that. Sure won't be booking a seat never again. Cheers for that.
