Recommendation for a second-hand hatchback, starter car

    Mrs Mambo and I are looking to buy our first car, something along the lines of:

    * 5-door hatchbatch
    * approx 3-6 years old
    * good reliability & fuel-efficiency (we don't mind paying a bit extra up front for these)
    * something basic & practical, we're not that worried about any fancy extras
    * approx budget: €4,000-€10,000

    We don't know much about cars, so are looking for advice!

    Any recommendations for makes/models? Diesel or petrol?

    Better to go through a dealer, or try for a private sale?
