you will need a dish to pick up satellite (bbcHd, itvhd)
you will need an aerial (depending on where you live) for DTT ,

a combo box will get you sat and dtt on one box, albeit only now and next on sat channels,

I set up a mvision200 last year for my Parents and they are happy with it.

it was replaced with the 300,

A satellite dish just like what Sky provide is needed for free to air satellite channels or freesat.

Irish DTT is currently transmitting on a test signal which can be received in alot of area's. I've been using an attic aerial to receive RTE1, RTE2, TG4 and RTE News Now without any interrupt for 3 months now, TV3 is gone about 6 weeks now. In the 12-18months previously there was the odd day or two (maybe a week) when channels where not available.

DTT/Sat combo boxes as already mentioned can be used for receiving both signals. The draw back with combo boxes is that they may only offer now and next program information for free to air satellite channels. There may be some ready made combo boxes that can give you full program guide know as EPG but I'm not to sure , but others here will advise you if there are any. Personally I use a Home theatre PC and have full DTT/Sat service with 7 and 8 day EPG but this is not an out of the box solution and as a newbie to the subject I don't want to confuse an already confusing subject any further for you.

The DTT/Sat combo box is an excellent cost efficient option for free TV the now and next thing might not be an issue for you. The best advise might really be gotten for a good local installer who knows your area. You should post your location details here I'm sure some of the very helpful members here can direct you to a good local installer.
