SMB File Sharing (Ubuntu Server / OS X Client)

    Hi Folks,

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience in connecting from OS X (10.5.8) to an SMB share on an Ubuntu Server (9.10). I have basically followed the steps outlined below.

    Ubuntu

Created a user for share access (OSXConnect)
Created a samba share using Samba Server Configuration applet making it visible and enabling read/write

    OS X

Open Finder, hit apple-key & K to bring up 'Connect to Server' dialogue
Enter in smb://<Ubuntu Server IP Address>
It connects to it fine and asks for usr / pwd
I use the user setup for this on the Ubuntu server (OSXConnect)
It then asks me to choose which volume/shared folder i want to mount
When I select one it says unable to mount.

I cannot find any thread on Ubuntu or on OSX related websites that seem to address this issue. So Im hoping that by posting this here someone will have gone through this mill and will be able to point me in the right direction.

    Regards,

    Dave

Hmmmmmmm it seems that the issue is with OS X, apparently other users of 10.5.8 are having problems with SMB shares (both windows and linux based).

Does anyone have a version other than 10.5.8 that is working with an Ubuntu SMB share?

Does anyone have 10.5.8 and is seeing the same problem with either a Linux or windows SMB share?

There is a difference between a users password and their samba password. Has osxconnect been given a samba password?

Does osxconnect have local access to the shared files, if you are logged on as osxconnect on the ubuntu computer can you browse the shared files?

Have you seen what happens when you make the share public?

    must it be samba?
Maybe simple NFS would suffice? It might even be better if linux & os/x are the only clients. I only do linux-2-linux myself presently but I should think os/x handles nfs without issue.

AFP, FTP or SMB using the inbuilt OS X file sharing software. No doubt there would be software to provide NFS though.

seems to be standard in os/x

I always understood os/x was (via mach) a bsd variant...?

    Hi Folks,

A bit of a late reply but I've been up to my gills for the past few weeks. So I've decided to abandon SMB as there is no single concrete resource that I can find that provides adequate information on how to set this up and what to do if any issues arise (yes I know alot of that is to do with my lack of knowledge of Linux). I have posted on the Ubuntu forums and I am thoroughly disappointed as the post has been ignored for over two weeks now despite my attempts to get it some attention. So I have decided to chuck SMB and try to use plain old NFS but even this won't go smoothly :(

I have been using the following two tutorials

    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031121094436907

From what I can see my main stumbling block is going to be synching the UID for my OSX user account and my Linux user account. Does anyone know how I can do this and what implications changing my UID will have.

Also at the moment when I re-initialize the NFS server I get the following error. Ive no idea why its giving this error, a poster in the thread above got a similar error but this was due to a space in the name of the location. No spaces in mine and its definately correct inluding cases.

exportfs: Warning: /home/davidius/Media does not support NFS export.

Any help, feedback would be appreciated. As an aside has anyone used Canonicals support? I'm considering getting a support package from them but if their forums are anything to go by its a waste of money.

    Dave

    re: uids
maybe specify the anonuid in the export on linux to ensure it always uses the correct linux uid.

    re: warning
And what type partition is /home/davidius/Media ?
