I am severely depressed. I have been taking antidepressants for a few years, and my dosage had to increased gradually. I am currently on a high dosage, and am more depressed than I have ever been. My days consist of staying in bed, no happiness, feeling sad all the time. Everything is a huge effort and have no interest in leaving the house, or doing anything. I can't sleep at night and spend the day resting, and staying in my house. I have no life, no happiness, and I don't know what to do anymore. Would anyone have any suggestions. Thank you

    Hi Op,

Sounds awful and maybe the medication is not working. Go your GP and asked to be referred to a qualified counsellor. This is probably the best solution for you.
    Good luck.

I'm not very good at this type of problem but I'm so sorry you feel
    like this

Could you go back to the doc who prescribed the antidepresssants?

It looks like you may need to have your condition re evaluated.

I hope you have supportive friends and family near to you.

Anti depressants do exactly what they say on the tin OP. They (momentarily) stop your depression. My guess is the anti depressants you have been prescribed are wrong for you. Unless you have been put on some new ones lately, and they have not yet kicked in?

While I have never been diagnosed with depression, I have certainly had low periods in my life and have taken anti-ds. Some took longer than others to kick in, others worked almost immediately.
Ultimately, you need to get to the bottom of your problem though OP which I'm sure you already know. For now, go back to your doctor and tell him/her that these anti-d's aren't suiting you.
Life can be good again OP. It really can.

or you could ask for the medication to be reviewed

OP here. I have been under alot of upset lately which has caused a huge depression with me. I have had depression for years, but its really bad now. My family do not understand me, and what I am going through, and are shouting at me telling me to "Change" or snap out of it, when its alot harder than that. Going to see my doc this week, and will need to get my tablets reviewed. My dosage has had to be increased over the years, and I have been on my current dosage for 2 years, but the past few months, they are not working at all. I hope the doctor can help me, its awful, not been able to go anywhere, do anything, or have any happiness at all. I guess I needed to get some of this out of my system, and thats why I'm posting here. Thanks for replies

First of all, OP, your family need just alittle more compasion and understanding towards you. Since they're not helping matters, maybe a little bit of education regarding depression would help and talk too them, let them know, it's not something one can snap out of.

With respect to medication, not many here are qualified to speak about it, but yes, your GP or specialise will advice you on the matter. Now Counselling, If you can't afford it, I believe there maybe some free Counselling in your area depending on where you live. Your GP may also help. Try and give Samaritans a call, they could possibly help with some emotional issues.

And when you're feeling somewhat better, try connecting more with friends and family, and try some simple activities to keep your mind active.

Hi op, if you're up for reading a few books I can recommend one or two. Lots of counsellors suggest reading material so if you do get to see someone they'll probably have a list you can select from.
I know it might sound stupid but I found understanding how my dreams work was a really helpful tool for recovery. I read about it in a book called Human Givens which is authored by two CBT therapists. Studies show that depression affects our sleep patterns and consequently our ability to dream and they theorize that dreaming is essential for good mental health as it acts as a release system for all the stuff that builds up during the day. Once I got a handle on how that works it was like handing over a heavy weight every night before I went to bed.

Has your GP suggested councelling or psychotherapy ? If you can afford it you should seek this immediately. If you can't afford to go private you can ask the GP about getting help from the state, you 'll just have to wait for a while

It's obvious that the pills aren't working so you're only wasting time and money with them. You should at the very least be trying different types of anti-depressants as they can work differently on different people. I tried three different types before I found one that had a satisfactory effect.
I'm sure you've given plenty of cash to your GP at this stage, so you need to get him working a bit harder for you.

Call the 'Aware' helpline. Just google 'aware ireland' and you'll find it.

Best of luck, take a few steps in the right direction and you'll be amazed how quickly things can improve - it did for me.

Hi OP I'm obv not giving medical advice but I think antideps should be taken in conjunction with counselling. You need to go talk to someone.
    good luck

My heart goes out to you OP and ive been there myself but the grogginess and apathy i felt on ADs just kept me in a foggy limbo for a few years until i decided to slowly wean myself of the meds and seriously up my exercise levels and basically take charge of my own body and mind. It wasnt and still isn't easy but whats the alternative. Meds and being in a foggy haze for life, no thanks.

Regular exercise, and i mean at least 1 to 2 hours of intensive exercise every second day plus a good diet has done so much more for me than ADs ever did. You really need to get a fitness regime together and i know its not easy pulling yourself out of the slump your in but its a vicious cycle that you have to break.

Even if you change your meds and find something that agrees with you a bit better you are still left with the unpleasant side effects of AD Meds that really can cause you more problems than the meds are worth.

I take a herbal supplement as well that helps with depression but it has no side effects and with the regular exercise and good diet i feel much better than i did when i was taking ADs, hoping that a little white tablet would solve all my problems.

If you have clinical depression or Bi-polar then meds may be necessary but exercise and good diet is equally as important but if your depression is related to something you are unhappy about then you need to zone in on this and deal with it. I hope you can pull through this, its awful to feel depressed to the point where you can't be bothered leaving the house but you need to take some responsibilty for your depression. Doctors and psychiatrists/psychologists can only do so much, the rest is up to us.

To everyone, please don't make claims that are not backed up by medical evidence and please don't advise someone to change/stop taking their medication without consilting a doctor

We cannot offer medical advice on Baords and have to close any threads that do

I would rather not have to close a thread that might help someone in need

I didn't at any stage tell the OP to stop taking his Meds without Consulting his Doctor, You might want to read my post again. Nor was i offering him Medical Advise. I was giving him some practical advise on how to pull himself out of the slump he is in.

In my opinion Anti Depressant/Anxiety Medication is over prescribed anyway because most doctors don't have a clue how to genuinely help someone who is depressed or anxious so they conveniently prescribe Meds. Meds work well for a few people but for most, they don't actually cure the illness. Infact anybody who is depressed/Anxious should take extra care of their mind and body.

OP, don't be cowed or afraid when you visit your GP. The doctor is there to help YOU. Explain to them exactly what you have said on boards.ie. The meds aren't working, you say, and you need a change, and you need to get this message across.

The good news is that many people have been where you are and have come out of it, never to return.

Everyone on here wishes you well.

Stu your post was edited to remove a claim about anti-depressants that whilst your opinion wasn't medically true

The rest of the Mod warning was pointed at everyone not just you, I had read your post and you didn't tell the OP to stop taking drugs without consulting his doctor which is why the warning wasn't aimed at you specifically

However in situations like this it is probably something that should be included in all posts, I don't necessarily disagree with your opinion but we have to be very careful about medical advice on Boards

In future if you have an issue with Moderation could you PM the Mod as playing it out on thread takes things off topic
