    Hey Guys,

Been given the glorious task of trying to spec a laptop for my sister and her family and have been given 500 euro, absolute max 600 euro to get one.

Their needs are very basic, but I haven't a clue what's good or bad with laptops (as I'm a mac user so I generally just buy and it suits me :pac:) but when it comes to the 1000's of permutations of windows laptops I'm stumped.

    Their main needs would be:
    • email/web/youtube etc.
    • video (blu ray hdmi out would be nice but not necessary )
    • photo cataloguing
    • kids games (9 and 5 year old no cpu melting crysis...yet :))

Who are the best manufacturers these days? i've had an acer laptop before i bought my macbook (5 years ago) and it was quite dire as windows laptops went, are they still bad? what's asus, dell, hp, IBM (might be a bit too business-y).

They should get a desktop but if it has to be a laptop i recommend a core i3 dell inspiron with the best hd/most ram you can get for your budget.

thanks, i suggested a desktop but they are a little stuck for space (i put it down to the kids having too much lego which isn't a bad thing in fairness :) )

are i3's any good? i know intel's current line is i3, i5, i7 with i7 being the best and i3 being the worst. would there be performance issues with an i3?

HP G62 looks decent for the money (currently £433).

Sony Vaio VCP-EB1E0E for a little more money (£489) has been a very strong seller.

Those prices need to be adjusted for Irish vat, but shipping is free. Have a look there at Amazon's best sellers and there is a whole bunch of great laptops in that kind of price range.

i3 would be fine for their uses.

theres a decent laptop in Argos its a samsung 17 inch laptop has a hdmi connection which means you can hook it up too the hdtv.

600 is good for a laptop with hdmi.

only thing about samsung is Ive never owned that brand before and never used one.
