Am considering entering the Civil Law Course in NUIG and was looking for some feedback from people who are currently doing it? Would you reccommend it or do you think there is better around? What about the oppurtunities afterwards, not just in pursuing law but in other areas?

    Thanks :D

Did the BCL a few years back. They've changed it a small bit, but I would definitely recommend it. Lecturers were generally good, class sizes small, and generally just a good crowd for banter.

The points have dropped quite a bit from when I did it, so in saying that I wouldn't necessarily bank on them being so low this year again. 440 is wayyyy too low for the BCL.

Thanks so much for that. There's so many courses on offer that it is difficult to choose. I always thought that about the points, was expecting Law to be around the 500 mark.

Hey, I kmow this is a late reply to this thread but just came across it today. I am just finished the BCL in NUIG.

When I got accepted in 2007, points were at 490- random selection! i.e not everyone with 490 actually got into the course. The points have dropped a lot though.

The course is 3 years long and you study the main law subjects with no huge choice until you reach 3rd year. Then you pick most of your own subjects.

Your options afterwards allow you to study a masters - not just in law but I think in any other area. You can go on to be a solicitor or barister, lecturer and I think there may be an option of doing the H.Dip.

Also you can do a Diploma in Irish for lawyers which is a another thing to add onto your CV. Its only 3 hours a week and looks good, especially now that Irish is an offical EU language.

While I am not a huge fan of the law faculty as regards communication, the BCL course is really good. They have done some changes in the last 4 years and you do practical research porjects and there is an option of placement in 3rd year - which is great for experience.

NUIG is well worth serious consideration, you have some brilliant lecturers and by 3rd year, some will know you by name and may even end up at your table having coffee or going to your class parties!

Better off with a UCD, Trinity or UCC degree tbh; more intensive, better lecturers, resources and reputation. If you get a 1:1 in law from NUIG your flying but otherwise you'll find it hard to get ahead of your legal peers without a specialised masters I feel.

*Final year BCL Student in NUIG

My sister has a BCL from NUIG and then went on to do her Masters in Trinity and said she doesn't rate Trinity as highly at all!!!
I did the LL.B. in NUIG, which is similar to the BCL (only a postgrad) and I found it to be an EXCELLENT course.
I've also been a student in TCD, UCD and University Ulster (Jordanstown) and done my primary degree in NUIG, aswell as the LL.B. there and I have to say...the social aspect in addition to the teaching side of NUIG are by far superior to any of the other colleges.

    Just on this,
I did the leaving in 2011 and decided to take a year out and apply this year. I got 455 so I am above the points requirement. However reading a few articles, people are saying points will jump across the board due to the maths bonus points.
Could anyone hazard a guess will the points rise for CL, I thought they would stay the same due to poor job prospects at the moment but I'm slightly worried now thinking about it further. I know no one can accurately predict what the points will do but some reassurance would be nice :pac:
