Martin Fagan has announced that he's going to run the marathon at the European Championships this summer in Barcelona. There will be no pacemakers etc and it'll be a real run race. He thinks this will suit him and he really feels like he could get a medal.

He's going to run a couple of 10k races over the next few weeks and then back to America for training.

A fully fit Fagan could certainly make an impact at the champs - it's exciting having a genuine Irish medal contender in the marathon!! Just once he gets their healthy, I've a good feeling.

The guy has never finished a marathon. He somehow injures himself on a semi annual basis. I wish him the best but a medal is out of his grasp...

    That's incorrect.
It would be great if he does run. Hopefully, AAI may send two more athletes with him to make up a team - Gary Thornton, Chris Cariss for example.

And if you wonder how he 'somehow' injures himself twice a year, maybe you should try a few 140mile weeks and see how long you last, because that's what it takes to run at the level he does.

Mark Carroll was actually very similar He got injured very regularly while in marathon training afte rhis 2.10 debut.

Depending on the field, the biggest barrier to Fagan achieving a top 5 in Barcelona will be his physical health. There won't be many sub 4 milers n the race and there haven't been many sub 61 European half marathoners in history.

This guy won gold in 2002 after the field let him go. The European Champs are a different class to Worlds/Olympics. A fit Fagan will have a great shout.

Edit: I've gone back 1971 and there's been no European marathon won quicker than 2.10.xx.

Sorry, I posted this 2 or 3 days ago... Obviously Fagan has finished a marathon.. Dubai 08. A race during which he got a stress fracture.

I should have said he's only finished one. Humble pie tastes nice.

Chris Solinsky has only ever ran one 10k in his life he still the 4th fastest of all time and the fastest white man at 10k ever. So just because a person has only raced once does not take away from their capability to challenge.
At the elite level it is not uncommon to be threading in the thin line of injured and fully fit. His achilles is a re occurring injury so which has been unable to fully sort yet despite this we have seen him race a fair bit more frequently at lower distances than in previous years which is an encouraging stat. Personally i reckon that he is well capable of challenging for a medal and i wish him the best of luck

While he may have the forth fastest debut in a 10 k he is not the 4th fastest 10k runner of all time although only athletes from four countries have broken the barrier Kenya, Ethopia, Uganda and America.
