When/where is it ok to point?

I was in a countryside pub yesterday. People did not know who I was. They were pointing at me, not all of them, not all the time, and not at the same time but some of them and then clearly asking the non-pointing person, "Who is that". There was no hiding the pointing, no shame in it (not that they should be ashamed).

I don't really mind, but it got me thinking. My first thought is that it is a "country" thing to.

I don't point that often myself (when i do i do the whole-hand-point, i'd rather do the "nod-of-the-head-in-the-direction-of" or the 180/360 degree thumb-point.

Is it ok to point? I kind of think it is ok.
