i think the part with the men with gloves on was just to show how paranoid he was, same thing with the part where the guy was sweeping earlier on in the film

the bit at the end which showed him as a child was to push home the point that he was such a tragic contradiction of a character, and despite being so driven and successful in whatever he did he never stood a chance due to his illness

    in this case
he had just achieved something that many had told him was impossible - yet rather than being able to celebrate he had to be locked into a dirty bathroom

actually i suppose one of the funny things about it is that his illness is what made him so good at what he did, attention to detail being his strong point although it was at the sacrifice of seeing the bigger picture, for example
not being able to choose a wheel for the plane, delaying its completion and costing a lot of money when it was a trivial detail

    Great explaination. ^^

It was just to demonstrate the key flaw in Howard Hughes character and to hint at his future and decline. The men were just waiters but in Hughes young mind they were already potential dangers to him (hense you have the sinister framing/lighting of the shot).

I think the line "Everybody works for you Howard" sums it up nicely. By the end of the movie Hughes has "won". He's become one of the worlds richest men and has overcome all obstacles laid before him(eg beaten the corrupt senator and got the H4 Hercules to fly). On the surface he had it all, talent, vision, intelligence, charm and wealth and should have the entire world at his feet but instead here he is hiding away in a dank toilet repeating paranoid mantra to himself. This was the price he had to pay for all he achieved. "The way of the future" is not referring to Jet Engines but instead refers to Hughes own future where he will become more and more obsessive, reclusive and paranoid of those around him.

To answer your other question I think the refecting on his childhood may have been to suggest that the way his mother brought him up may have had a profound effect on him and lead him down this road of screwed up compulsion/paranoia. Again that is just my interpretation of it and may be way off. I haven't read any biogs on him yet.

(incidentally, this may not be Scorcese's best picture but it's still my favourite of his).

Btw, just learnt those guys at the end of the movie weren't waiters. I think they were referred to as "caretakers".
