Hi ,I'm trying to buy something from a site that I thought was irish.

The item is roughly €35 ,but when the paypal page comes up it's adding over a €7 sales tax ?
All prices on the site have no mention of this and the site is suppose to be free delivery:(

    What's the site?

There is no such thing as sales tax in Ireland anyway, so that sounds like a US site. 20% sales tax seems quite high too, but it could be VAT which is 21%, and they've just called it the wrong name. Unless they sell to businesses, all quoted prices should include VAT already.

Now that you mention vat ,there is an option as you checkout to choose Home or Business. Sorry ,I haven't come across something like an art site adding vat ,without any notification ,something I'd expect from viking direct.

I looked up the web address and the business is listed in ireland

    Thanks.

    hmmm.... Athlone !

a Ltd company.... I would suggest contacting them and asking for an explanation - its possible that their sales system is run through USA - but they should have control over the relevant taxes/postage fees etc etc.

I might do that ,it's a bit sneaky that amount only gets added on ,on the paypal page.

you wouldn't think of calling them? = their phone number is fairly prominent at the top of the page.

I usually find that you get the quickest and most correct answer when contacting the company themselves before posting on a forum:rolleyes:

it looks like they are a business to business company that also sells to the public, therefore prices can be shown ex vat, though they bshould state this.

No ,I wouldn't think of calling them ,especially as I was about to order on a bank holiday sunday.
Do you find it beneficial to share your knowledge ,after everything is answered ?

Keep your rolleyes for someone who appreciates them.

From what I can see the extra charge is a delivery charge - it actually says at paypal "including shipping" and in the terms and conditions it says delivery charge of €7.00 plus VAT.

It's a poor design of a website to leave potential customers like yourself confused though.

It has free delivery plastered all over the site though ,I don't think it's a delivery charge.
It seems to be vat ,but no mention of pre-vat or business to business sales on the site.

I want to buy from them ,but when something like this happens it's always good to get a second opinion.

It says free delivery for FRAMED prints. At €30 I'm assuming your print isn't framed. Link to delivery charge mentioning

The order I had had a total of just over €35 for a framed print ,including mat.
When I got to the payment screen this suddenly jumped to just over €42, at no time was there a detail of charges for either vat or delivery mentioned.

I started this thread because I didn't know what a sales tax was and because I wasn't sure about the site. I've never been ripped of online and I've spent tens of thousands at this stage:(

The link you provided seems to be in relation to bulk business orders ,but even at that it's not quite clear.

Heres the delivery info page for home customers ,

Sorry - my bad. Had a look there at a framed print which added 35 euro onto a cost of 110. Went all the way through paypal and after logging in it does indeed say sales tax.

That combined with the numerous spelling mistakes across the site would put me off completely to be honest.

No bother ,I'll probably ring them tomorrow to see what they say ,but I don't like the way the site works myself ,even if it is vat.

    Thanks for the replies.
