flights during peak jul/aug time :(

I have always taken longhaul trips over the last few years - for 4 weeks minimum at a time. My work are now enforcing specific holiday shutdown - with no flexibility. This will make the main holiday slots end/jul-start of aug and christmas :(

I have tried not even to think of what the hell i will do this year. I did reluctantly check some flights and of course they are all 2x the price i normally pay (i would normally go in feb-june). This makes quite a difference on a long-haul and its compounded by the fact i can only go for 2 weeks now. I dont want to spend the money - so i guess i will have to resign myself to a medium-haul trip...maybe lebanon, syria, north africa, turkey...although i guess the problem is going to be the same.
Is there such a thing as last minute flights or is that really something from the past? Is it possible to get to any of these places during that time without getting ripped on the airfare??

Thanks in advance from a píssed off travel lover.

Airlines have been reducing capacity on some routes due to the recession so there aren't many last minute deals (that I can ever find).

Have you gone into a travel agent or are you just checking on the internet? My local travel agent is great and she's always able to compete with or beat the prices on the internet. They can check handy stuff like how many cheap seats are available or various different airlines at the same time.

Or you could try looking at AirAsia. (They're the Ryanair of long haul to Asia). They're cheap but only fly from London so you have to factor in the flights to London but it might save you a few quid if you're interested in that part of the world.

But get the best prices on the internet then wander in to your travel agent. No harm in trying.
