Anybody what the craic is setting up a society?
There was a soc that was around year before last, they didnt do much but was I kinda interested in it, don't think the were around this year.. But i was thinkin of setting it up next sept, with a few friends and gettin it going a bit better.
I have no experience in being on a committee of a soc so kinda in the dark about all this.
Has anyone here set up a soc from scratch? How would I go about getting organised?

Heya, I set up a society this year.

First and most important step is to arrange a meeting with Ian Russell. He'll let you know whether the society will get ratified and let you know what the basic crack is with getting set up.

Secondly, you need to get 60 members in your first year to gain 'recognition.' That means that you'll be insured and have access to all the usual SU stuff, like an email address and a post-box, and help setting up a bank account.

Then after a successful year, you should get 'ratified.' Which means the SU gives you MONEY. It's complicated, but not that much. You need to write a constitution and apply for recognition which is a pain, but it's worth it when it works out.

After July, you can call in to me in the SU and I'll give you any help you need. Good luck!
