BackgroundA newly established umbrella body supported by more than twenty animal welfare charities, including I.C.A.B.S the I.S.P.C.A will hold the following public meeting.

The discussion will promote the argument in favour of banning Carted Stag Hunting; the hunting of farmed deer with hounds, having regard to the serious ethical, societal, legal and animal cruelty concerns associated with this 200 year old practice.

The issue is topical and the subject of much controversial debate. Legislation to amend the Wildlife Act 1976 repealing section 26 (1) (ii) relating to the hunting of deer with a pack of hounds has just been published and is currently before the House.

Under this proposed legislation The Ward Union Hunt Club based in Co. Meath will effectively be prohibited from hunting their herd of farmed red deer with hounds. Through pro-hunt lobby group RISE a campaign of resistance to the proposed legislation is underway. The Fine Gael Party has already pledged to repeal any such amendment if elected to the next Government.

The above public event will hear the practice of the carted stag hunt being examined from a variety of perspectives from notable key Irish figures. We invite you to send a media representative to hear this diverse and prominent panel outline why legislation banning the hunting of stag with hounds must be enacted urgently.
