Never used it, never cared that I had it, don't care about not having it anymore

I guess I should add that I used it initially, but don't care that it's gone!

Never used it but I hate the fact that they took it away because:

    a) other people did use it regularly and got screwed by Sony
    b) it sets a precedent for stripping back other features in future updates.
    c) it makes me think that the next PS console will not be the one for me because I can't trust Sony to allow me to keep a feature that I paid for.

Never used but care greatly about a manufacturer removing a feature from a sold unit.
Precedent now set , forgetting about otherOS etc.
Just cause it was lightly used is not relevant and the excuse of it been an optional removal is bull .

Used ubuntu a few times on the PS3 and loved how you could run Linux on your PS3. If it wasn't for that arrogant tool of a hacker we would still have OtherOS.

The possibility of getting all my casual gamer friends onto Quakeworld has gone *poof*.

I used it but dont care.

I get Mixednuts point of view which is very important, but the opinion that some tool of a hacker could hack the PS3 outweighs this !
And yes Sony should have taken more time in figuring out a better solution.

Didn't give a crap that it was there in the first place, don't give a crap that it's gone now...

Don't care. I have a slim so never even had the option to do it. Dont agree with them doing it though, set's a bad precedent.

I never used it so it doesn't really matter to me, but that is a very, very good point.

I never would have thought about it as I don't use it, but your right , it's terrible that they can just remove those features.

    and locked iphones

its not geohot's fault anyway, its sonys fault for leaving a hole open. human are nosey and love trying to do new things, you cant blame geohot for trying to figure a way in, if you have an issue with him you may as well have an issue with everyone whos ever done anything remotely innovative all the way back to the dawn of time

Locked iPhones are a whole other animal. Apple sold a phone that you couldn't use the way you wanted to use it. You could only use it the way they wanted you to use it.

Sony were generous to users with giving them the opportunity to run another OS on their PS3 without doing a single mod. That in essence gave you the ability to do anything you want on the PS3 since with linux you could run anything that you pleased so long as it didn't access the RSX. The PS3 didn't need to be "hacked" like the iPhone did. You could do pretty much as you pleased with it straight of the box thanks to linux.

Geohot just wanted to prove his hacking skills to the world by hacking the unhackable. He achieved nothing but inciting Sony to remove one of the most interesting features of the PS3.

    What is Other OS?

People bought it just for that reason. Some research facilities used lots of them strung together as supercomputers and installing another OS was crucial.

Where's the option for "Didnt use it, glad it's gone" (because Sony don't need to spend money and dev effort supporting it anymore diverting resources from features I use).

I never used it but I echo others sentiments about removing features that were paid for. As far as I could tell the other OS had absolutely no relevance though, I certainly never even thought about using it. Could anyone explain what exactly the benefits were for running a different OS?

For the average person? Not that much really. I used it at the start because the video playback on the PS3 wasn't great but, that has since been greatly improved so I didn't need it any more. If you're genuinely interested in seeing what all the fuss about Linux is, you could set it up to dual boot alongside windows on your pc/laptop. I'm a 4th year cs student so, I like using linux for programming and stuff but I prefer windows for most other things.

You could install Linux (like windows) and use it to run a number of features that you would use on a PC.

You could download torrents, Watch videos that the PS3 doesnt support, install Firefox so you could surf the net at a resonable speed, word processing. Run emulators so you could play gameboy/PCgames on your PS3. A whole host of features.

If you are lucky enough to have a PC as well then it may not be needed. But if you bought a PS3 because Sony told you it could be used as a PC as well as play games etc then you would be mighty pissed off that they took it away for a bullplop reason.

Thats why people are upset. Someone with no internet connection wouldnt care if Sony took away online gaming but everyone else would be upset as Sony used this to promote the PS3. Same thing here its just some people dont care becasue they dont use it and cant see the bigger picture.
