You could appeal the decision; but success isn't a foregone conclusion. But did you not speak to the Super before going and buying the safe, joining the club, and so forth?

What kind of handgun did you have in mind?

Are you interested in any other kind of shooting?

Then the answer is - almost certainly. Unless you're interested in certain other kinds of shooting as well / instead.

this probably a silly question, but can you not apply for a licence pending serial number, as in dont buy anything until you have been granted the licence, sounds a bit backward that you have to buy all the gear before you find out if your aloud to own a firearm

No you can't. You have to have the serial number in order to get the licence in the first place. And yes, but if you talk to teh superintendent, they will sometimes advise you of the likely outcome of a given application, so you know whether to go ahead with the security stuff. It also shows you've got it in mind, so the super may be more amenable to your application in the first place. You're right, in that it is slightly the wrong way around, but you can make it work for you like this.

    Hi
But what about takeing the gun across the border to shoot in the club i was thinking of joining in newry

ah right, i know up with us (tyrone) we can apply for a license pending serial number takes between 2-4 months, when you get the approval letter you go buy your gun and send the approval letter back to them with the serial number on it and two - three weeks later you get your license with all the appropiat bit's on it, then go collect your gun,
its not the usual way of doing it though, most people buy the gun then ask for permision to have it, but most dealers want a deposit down on a gun and if you get refused your up the left, cant blame them they'd be torchered with people saying they want a gun then not buying it after all the paperwork starts

You'll need to get a temporary firearms certificate from the PSNI. Your club should sponsor you to have it. You'll need to get a European Firearms Pass with your licence down here in order to get that.

I'm not 100% sure about this and am only going on information I heard from a man who heard it from a lad who's got this mate....etc. But maybe someone who may know more details could confirm or contradict this:

I've heard that the Guards will not accept membership of a club or range in the North as "good reason" for your licencing any firearm, as they legally speaking are not "authorised ranges" or "authorised clubs" as far as our legislation is concerned.

Therefore, even if you do join the club you were thinking of in Newry, this still, from what I've heard, will not be deemed an authorised club or range for the purposes of you licencing a handgun. So best check this out in far more detail before making any decisions.

BTW You can license and shoot and join a range / club this side of the border to shoot target pistols. But I take from your handle, Mr. Glock34, that it's the centrefire pistols you're interested in?:D

And if it was a centrefire pistol you wanted to use for target shooting, AFAIK it would be irrelevant whether you're a member here or up North as this is not going to allow you to licence and own a centrefire pistol, unless you already have had one licenced etc etc etc.....And even then, good luck to you, when you see and hear the hassle some lads are having.

If you're new to target pistol shooting, maybe it may be wiser to consider 22 pistol target shooting, which you should be able to access far more readily.

But then again, your handle is glock34 and not beretta87!:D;)

Also do your homework on the Walther P22. Do a search on here to see all the bad reports. Plenty of other .22 pistols out there. Pick something which can hold a group at 25 meters. The lads on here are a wealth of information :D Welcome to the forum :):)
