    so here's my story...

I bought an xps m1710 few years ago, and about 6 weeks ago it went and died.
All the symptoms pointed to the motherboard...

I was tempted to sell for parts, but i knew i would only get €300 max, and after spending 2,600 on it, i was not ready for that.

Funny enough, i got fed up searching ebay for parts, i went to adverts to throw an ad up to see if anyone was interested in buying it off me.

Then i saw an 6 ad's with m1710 parts. The seller aparently had a dead GPU.
I quickly snapped most of them up, for €215 inc delivery.
Verry good seller, and great quality items & packaging.

They arrived today! So, i stripped out everything, and put his motherboard in the laptop, re-assembled it, and plugged it in.
The power light came on, so i thought SUCCESS!!

turned it on, and same problem as before :( my heart sank, and my fist hit the door.
So, i decided to throw it all in a box, and ignore it for a few weeks.

While on google an hour later, i read someone fixed their laptop by baking their gpu in the oven at 200*c for 10mins.
    I thought what the hell.

i threw both gpu's in, and prayed for the best.

Finally, they cooled down, i applied some artic silver, and slapped them together with the other parts.

Both motherboards & gpu's worked! I couldn't believe my luck! After all the hassle this laptop has put me through the last few weeks, all it needed was to be roasted alive in an oven :eek:

So just to add, if anyone else has a similiar problem with hardware, and your out of warranty, dont turn your back on the extreme home remedies

it really paid off for me!

Ive been astonished by the stories myself, but there you go. The idea being that the original press wasnt done hot enough, so the soldering material was irregularly heated and inconsistent throughought: meaning when you played the GPU under high stress (and temperature) the soldering became unstable.

By cooking the component you get the solder material back up to a uniform consistency.

enjoy it while it lasts, its the CTE kicking in. (coefficient of thermal expansion....!)

your gpu was f****ed, why did you spend monies on a mobo in the first place.

id be very surprised if your laptop lasts a month, but do let us know. :):):pac::pac:

Im guessing he didnt know it was the GPU, how could he tell?
I have read through forums where people have cards that have already lasted over six months since baking with regular gaming, i bet it will last at least a year! :D

honestly, id be perfectly happy getting even 6 months out of it. At least now i know i need to start saving for a new laptop, but in the mean time i have something to use!

Its better than having nothing at all, until i can afford to buy a new one.

If the netbook is less than a year old then you may be able to get it fixed under warranty even without a receipt. When i had to contact Asus about a faulty eee pc they didn't ask for any proof of purchase. Perhaps that was an isolated case but still it's worth a shot...before baking.

50 degrees is fine so says bender, he likes his circuits heated up to 250.

I found on ebay quite cheap mobo for Eee, so i gonna baked that one and see what's happen. Should i put it in the aluminium foil firstly and exactly how many min. and temp.?? Do You know also where is Asus service in IRL.??
If i put mobo into the oven and preheated on 50 degrees for 8 min. is it gonna be safe for her (i mean: i don't burn another condensators etc.)??
One more: it might be some problem with serviced that netbook, because it was bought on laptopsdirect in UK.

So i gonna preheat on 200 degrees and then mobo inside for 10 mins (i remove WIFI, Blutetooth card etc.)
I take off the mobo after 8 mins. Looks good (nothing was burnt or any kind of that way). Now i have to wait till it will be cold - let You know after is it work.
It didn't help. Mobo works, but nothing shows on the screen.

Cooked my son's 7900gs a couple of months ago and all is well since. Installed 18kfangui also. Anyone got a cure for the earphone socket on the motherboard. That's the second Achillies Heel on these machines.
