A relative of mine is looking for a 4X4 that is suitable for pulling a horse trailer. They have a budget of 10k. I would say a 2.5 litre or 3litre diesel would be the way to go?

Would would be the best options?

Do they do much mileage? What else will be expected of it other than pulling the trailer? How heavy is the trailer?

Kia Sorento , excellent towing vehicle with a low range gearbox, really comfortable to drive and a fairly powerful 2.5 turbo diesel engine, youd pick up an 04-05 one with leather and all the bits for under 10k

Ok well they would do average mileage, they would at most be towing a trailer with two smallish/average size ponies.

This will also be used as an everyday vehicle and will be their only car so would need to be economical and cheap enough to run. Reliablity is also very important.

What's average mileage?;) Do they need back seats, or would a commercial do? Are they sensitive to how it drives? What i'm trying to figure out here is whether they'd be happier in an SUV or an AWD estate.

Okay, at most they would do 20,000 miles a year. This will be their only car so would need to be flexible so back seats would be more suitable, as long as they can either fold back or have plenty of room in the back for animal feed etc etc.

It would also need to not be expensive to insure.

I should also mention that it will be towing but not off road at all, so needs to be good and comfortable ride on tarmac/motorways.

Also a newish one so 04 at the earliest would be more suitable

Seeing as they need seats i would say a crew cab would be the best option,5 seats, commercial tax and insurance and you can throw the feed in the back,A saloon 4x4 would be expensive to tax and not that versatile when it comes to carrying loads...
    Examples;
    Nissan Navara:http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/commercials/1264776
    Isuzu D-Max:http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1264093

A friend of mine is into horses and reckons the best yoke for getting through fields with a horse box attached is a Subaru Forrester he has used it many times to pull other more expensive vehicles out of muddy fields 10 K would probably get a 05 these days

If you're towing for pleasure, it seems the Traffic Corps and Revenue are checking on misuse of commercial tax and impounding vehicles and trailers not on business use. Also the appropriate licence entitlements are being checked.

If the OP feels the need for 4x4, with a budget like that (makes a change from "what can I get for 2k?"), you've a wide choice but you can forget economy. Like others have said, a large SUV or AWD estate may be better (definitely comfort and ride wise) if the off road ability isn't needed, just be sure that the vehicle is rated to tow a horsebox and 2 ponies.

There's no way I could stand a crew cab for 20,000 miles a year. They're just not nice places to be - though there might be the exception. While they might be a convenient tax dodge, their driving characteristics are generally shìte.

I'd look at Darsad's suggestion (and Anan1's suggestion on the way) of something like a Forester.

A crew cab is out of the question, they really don't like them. They are set on a 4x4 so thats what we have to go with.

Could someone list all the appropiate options for me please - must be good on everyday roads, must be diesel.

What about the following (not sure what prices would be):

    HONDA CR-V
    KIA SORENTO
    NISSAN X-TRAIL
    SUBARU FORESTER
LAND ROVER (THO PROB WAY OUT OF BUDGET)
    HYUNDAI SANTA FE OR TUCSON
    ISUZU TROOPER
    A JEEP VARIANT
MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER OR SHOGUN OR PAJERO
    SUZUKI GRAND VITARA
    TOYOTA LAND CRUISER OR RAV-4
    VOLVO XC90

Now i don't know if the above suggestions are suitable or not, just things ive found on net while searching, but needs to be reliable, inexpensive to run, cheap enough to service, reasonably economical (if thats possible on a 4X4), comfortable ride on roads, able to tow two average size ponies in a trailer.

Your asking for something that isnt eally achieveable - a 4x4 that can pull a fairly heavy load, but still be economical and good to drive on roads.

unfortunately there isnt really such a thing available. They will have to compromise on one or two of the above to get a vehicle for the job.

I'd steer clear of Jeep because they're useless. Something like a Pajero/Sorento/Pathfinder/Landcruiser is what they need.

Okay well, they like the look of the following:

    Hyundai Santa Fe
    Kia Sorento
    Honda CR-V
    Nissan XTrail
    Toyota LandCruiser

What is the general consensus on the above models, are they suitable for their needs? What will they be able to get in terms of model and year for their 10k budget? I'm assuming you'd get a newer model of the Hyundai and Kia than you would with the others?

No diesel option there, all petrol, unless he gets a new one, diesel is cheaper to buy and does better mpg over all,
also option to convert diesel to run on PPO. WHICH is cheaper still

high tax on landcruiser if your getting one with seats, although its best one on your list when it comes to been a work horse and a comfortable ride on road, nissan xtrail , hope it does throw conrod out side of engine like all the navaras do,, rest are more car than jeep,
for comfort 4x4 and a good diesel engine, and value for money considering price new,
