Advice on Wedges

I was in Elverys in fonthill today and was surprised to see that Nevada Bobs have taken over the golf section. I was killing time as the car was being NCT'd and prices seemed very cheap. 170 for a Mocad and 99 for a taylormade Burner Driver same for the R9.

Anyway i got looking at the wedges and the Cleveland CG 15 caught my eye. They also had Wilson TW9 wedges for almost half the price of the CG 15's

My question is this as a mid- high handicapper is there really any point on me splashing out on the Clevelands or would i be as well off with the Wilsons.

    Any help appreciated.

What do you mean by "same for the r9"?

Hi r9 s were there for 99 as well! Could not believe it. Off to give my own wedges one last chance to prove themselves now and if they don't I will be off to fonthill!

How much were the TW9 an CG15 wedges ?

TW9's were definately 60 euro. Cg15 were either 95 or 99 cant remember.

Think i'll pick up 3 x TW9's tomorrow if its open.

the examiner (well, their golf writer anyways) were suggesting that amateurs should stock up on their favourite wedges this year cause there is gonna be a worldwide shortage in 2011 (seen as new wedge regulations come into place soon afters - 2014?)

good point, although the rule doesn't come in untill 2014 company's such as Cleveland are not making any more zip wedges after this year(so they say but i'm skepticle)

You can still use clubs with the "old" grooves until 2024.

They may not be designing any new models, but surely they'll still be selling they're current models??
I cant see any possible reason they wouldn't.

Rules are that any wedges manufactured after the end of this year must be conforming to the new groove rule. All new designs from the start of this year must be conforming also, and that's why Mizuno released their new TP-10 wedges in December last year.
They can be used by elite amatuers til 2014, and by us general hackers til 2024

They'll be manufacturing the current models until the end of this year then selling until stocks run out, must stock up on some nice sharp vokeys before that. On a similar note are all new 2010 irons manufactured to comply with new groove rule?

    WTF???????!!!!!!

Can anyone confirm or deny this?????

    €99 for an R9???!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,051 ✭✭✭jimbling

hmmm, I hadn't realised that at all. I thought all current models would continue to be manufactured.
How would people know when they were manufactured? What about custom clubs? No way they can keep track of that. They should be either legal or not legal. Allowed to use, but not manufacture is ridiculous.

I love my wedges, but now I feel like I should buy another set just to have.

The R9 price must be a typo or something. One of the lads I used to work made a mistake of printing a half a dozen or so Cleveland Launcher fairway woods price tags for 75 euro. At the time it they were selling for 175 euro.

Do the Cleveland CG15 zip wedges spin noticeably more than the CG16? I prefer the look of the 15, has a smaller head

I'd be pretty sick if you can get a new R9 for €99 seeing as I paid €199 for one just over a month ago! Great club though.
