The Basics (New HTC Desire Owner!)

    Hey all,

So here on my desk I have a shiny new HTC Desire on Meteor - took 2 weeks of ringing/calling into different stores, but I got one in the end this afternoon! :D

    I'm coming from a Nokia 5800 - first impressions..

    - Wow! The screen is gorgeous!
    - It's VERY touch sensitive (can this be adjusted somewhere?)
    - Pretty easy to setup.. I took the advice in other threads and moved all my contacts to Gmail so it has synced right up with it and my Facebook accounts.

Few questions though to those that have this phone a while.. I may just be missing the obvious but any advice appreciated!

    - I have it connected to my WLAN, but I had to enable SSID broadcasting to do it. It wouldn't connect on it's own when it was hidden. Is this normal?

    - How do I (or can I) set the phone to use the network for data only if Wireless isn't available? I moved to the top rate Meteor plan with 5GB storage (I was already on the top rate older plan) but I'm wary of this thing eating through data caps!

    - I already installed Handcent for my SMS needs and I'm looking through the recommendations threads, but all I really want (so far) is a good MSN client, Hotmail support (asking too much? If so, it's not a big deal as I'm in the process of moving to GMail anyway), and well.. I dunno... what have I been missing with Nokia that I really SHOULd look at now? :p

    Any advice much appreciated!

Dunno about MSN, but I have a Hotmail account set up as the Mail account (separate to Gmail), and there's an app called Fring that will log-in to Skype, Gchat, MSN Messenger, etc for your IM needs.

I'm pretty sure it will automatically choose WiFi over 3g etc. if WiFi is switched on.

3G watchdog will monitor and alert you if your data usage approaches your limit.

Thanks guys.. got Hotmail and 3G Watchdog installed - can't get over how fast it is actually - and that'll definitely help :)

Justin: Cheers for that as well.. I'd normally just leave it connected if I'm at home but as I say, I don't want it costing me a fortune. I'm getting a bit worried by the "E" with up/down arrows flashing at the top

Oh and in Contacts, it is possible to only show contacts on the phone (or in People) rather than the default of a full list with call history on the one screen.

I think it's getting the list in People from my Gmail Contacts - can this be copied to the phone itself and displayed as the Default or best to leave as it is?

Alternatively, is there a better Contacts manager altogether that I should get?

    :)

I reckon you won't have any worries with a 5 gig allowance, I'm only up to 350mb (since last Thursday) and I use it more than my laptop now.

When you say Contacts do you mean the Dialer application (as for all intents and purposes Contacts is implemented by People in HTC's Sense UI)? If you do, hit the button on the bottom right and try out a few of the other tabs selectable through the dock at the bottom.
