There is almost nothing on earth more annoying than a clicking bottom bracket.

Suggest you start by checking that the cranks are adequately lubed and torqued, then move on to the bottom bracket itself.

Of course, it could be nothing to do with the BB. That's the really annoying part.

what type of bb is it, external of tapered?

Had trouble with the BB on a bike two weeks ago, or so I thought.
Stripped the BB and replaced the bearings.
    Still creaking after that.
Turned out to be the pedals were the cause.
So before you strip the bike have a look else where.
If the click is intermittent check the position of the cable from the front derailleur cable, it could be touching the crank when on the inside ring.

If its an alloy cotterless try tightening up both BB bolts that secure left and right crank and also pedals.

Worst scenario it could be pitted bb bearing race but hardly unlikely.

how old is it, because it could just be routine replacement. is there play in the bb? and is it sealed or not

I know exactly, what you mean. My bike developed a cracking noise, only when lifted my arse off the saddle, sprinting or climbing.
To cut a long story short. I replaced the bottom bracket, the chain and cassette, exchanged wheels from my other bike. "The noise still persisted"
I exchanged bars and stem, all to no avail.
Then in a moment of sheer inspiration, I swopped the fork. problem solved:)
Upon very close examination, I found a tiny piece of alloy swarf on the aluminium dropout of the Trek fork, had worked loose.

Five seconds with a file, job done.:D

I have worked in the cycle trade, as a mechanic. Tracking down strange noises, can be a time consuming and quite frankly frustrating business.

    Happy Cycling:)

    Thanks for all the replies.

The bracket is part of a truvativ elita chainset. Sealed bearings. Less the one year old. Don't think its a torque issue or pedal issue because if i even just spin the cranks the clicking perisists always at the same position in the rotation. And bloody annoying it is!!

Could be water's just gotten into the threads of the BB cup. Unscrew them, grease the threads and screw them back up. Worked for me last weekend. Creaking driving me mad and now it's gone. An it's an ISIS truvative BB too.

doesnt the truvativ elita need external bearings? or are the cranks a older version?

I find since you cant torque the external cups for the BB up to anything much, they can get loose and this causes a clicking.

As mentioned it can be a thousand and one things. Best thing is to just go at it Methodically , maybe do a different job each day working down from the obvious to the suprising.
