Depressed, losing hope now (tried counselling, on ADs etc.)

I've been depressed for nearly five years now. I previously created a thread with all the details so I won't go into them again. I'm just looking to ask for where I can get help for it now? I've been seeing a psychiatrist now for a few sessions and taking an AD but I don't feel like its going anywhere. I told him all my problems in the first session. He keeps telling me with each session that the next one will go into detail into each problem but everytime, its the same "How do you feel today?" I tell him how I am but he doesn't provide any feedback. I'm not expecting him to wave a magic wand and make me instantly better but I was hoping that he can give me some insight into what he perceives is going on with me and tell me how I can change things. He's given me some little feedback telling me to focus on the positive things but its kind of hard to do that when I'm feeling down most of the time and can't think positively. I've been trying to do things that I enjoyed doing before to make myself feel better but I've lost a lot of interest in them so most days, I just sit at home walking around or sleeping.

In my view, the only person who can get me out of it is myself since no one can know me better than I know myself. The AD has helped make my mind more stable so I figured that I should take action on the things that are causing my depression and fix them. As much as I'd love to believe myself doing that, there are one or two issues that I'm having difficulty with that I don't know how to solve so I'm struggling to think of how I could solve my depression.

Are there are any other things I could try other than taking ADs or talking to someone?

Sorry to hear your feeling low. I think that you may need to change consellors. You could national consellor of ireland and they could be you in touch with the correct type of consellor.

You need to keep trying consellors untill you find the correct one. Set up a meeting with a few of them and tell what you want to happen in each session. At the end of the day its your money and your life.

IMHO a good therapist/counsellor is worth their weight in gold, and your one doesn't sound like a good one at all. He should be listening to you more and actively trying to dig deep and bring up the causes of your mental state, not dance around things with "How are you feeling today?" and positive thinking malarkey. He is just making his job easier for himself, which is not helping you at all.

    +1 on King Mallie's suggestion. 100%

    Hi OP,

You have probably already heard this, but there are different styles of counselling etc. What works for one person may not work for the next. If you feel you have given this one a fair chance and aren't getting anything out of it, then try another one. Have been to counsellors myself that were very much of the "how do you feel today" method (nodding & murmuring all the time!!) and found it didn't work at all so try something/someone different before giving up on it altogether!
    best of luck x

I heard an item on the radio the other week about excersise being beneficial in treating depression - have you tried this? Definitely worth a try - it will take your mind off things for an hour if nothing else.
