    wow

We went from serving 40 pages per second to 60 pages per second in about 10 minutes and stayed above 60 pages per second for quite a while. Highest number I saw was 71 point something.

Here's the graph of users online that I was looking at:

    Next stop, over 9000. :)

I take it the spike @ 3pm was when the news was broadcast at large

I wish to congratulate the hamsters; 18 months ago this amount of traffic would have crushed the sites performance.

Apparently not at 3am, there are 1392 online now.

If I remember rightly, it gets pretty low at around 5am or so, after most of the UTC people go to sleep and before others wake up.

Yeah was initially shocked about G Ryan but it has passed now. Say the posts have dropped off quite considerably in the meantime

no, lets all rush to boards to see if there is substance to the rumors. You will find boards.ie will contain both rumors and links to news stories no matter what the topic.. its the fastest to have information on any major topic sometimes i find. When i was told gerry ryan died, i went to boards to see if there was any substance to the rumors..

Indeed, boards and RTE were pretty much the only two Irish "media" websites which didn't slow to a complete crawl at the time. And RTE.ie had no information on it, which is probably why no-one was visiting it.

Heard Dempsey on Today FM this morning. Mentioned both Facebook and Twitter but left us out in terms of the breaking news.
Which as another poster said is probably beside the point in what was a terrible tragedy for the family.
But strange how he didn't mention it all the same.

    Same.
I seen the RIP Gerry Ryan group appear on Facebook.
Came to Boards to see if it was a joke. Thread was already in over drive at that point.

I imagine Dempsy has formed an opinion of Boards, and at the least didn't want to give it a nod based on that.

Agreed but as such he was misrepresenting the story as such

    From Gerry Ryan's wiki page:
At 14:30 a member of online forum boards.ie created a thread entitled "Gerry Ryan is dead" [60]. She stated "My uncle who works as an ambulance driver just texted me that Gerry Ryan died, RIP". The original post was ammended by a moderator at 16:07 to read: RTÉ did not officially reveal Ryan's death until 15:30; however some of his colleagues could not wait to reveal the news.

    From Gerry Ryan's wiki page:
I think that entry is poor. Any of RTE staff I assume would have been under instruction not to release this until cleared to do so given the sensitivity of the story.

Miriam O'Callaghan tweeted about it before most people even knew about it and well before it was officially announced on RTE. She took the tweet down though shortly after posting it.
