First time unemployed, advice

Made redundant a while back and looking for advice about the whole signing on process.
I've put it off these last few weeks for no reason other than pride etc..which is stupid I know considering I paid my taxes these last few years.
Anyway, can you sign on at any social welfare office? Or is it where you lived or worked? What if the place you live is different to where you work?
How often do you visit the social welfare office after the first visit? How long does it take? What are the good and bad days to sign on?
I'm dreading it really, any tips would be great, thanks.
I know we are all entitled to certain benefits etc for paying PRSI but I'm really not looking forward to it..to those of you who signed on, how honest are you with others about it? Telling friends etc..it just seems so far removed from whats going on in everyones life at the minute..
Oh, and if I was to get say one days part-time work how much would it hit my entitlements?

Sign on at you local office (closest to where you live),after you sign on you will be told what day you have to sign on next.Bring p45 and picture id.sign on asap.

Who you tell is your business, citizens advice office or website has nearly all the info you need about extra benefits.
One days work one days loss of benefit, more than 3 days work lose all benefits for that week.
