    have a Read

FBD say that because of the "Massive" €12,000,000's of claims it incurred this winter, it is going to be forced to raise premiums..

    what a load of kack!

12 Mil is nothing to a company like FBD

Basically what they are saying is...
    Quinn are going under...
    Therefore the competition is gone...
Lets Raise the premiums and say that it's because of an additional €12 Million worth of claims incurred due to frozen pipes.

Will anyone step in and stop them?
    The answer is "No"

    F*****g disgraceful carry on
It even says at the end, the number of non-winter related claims are lower than they were this time lat year.

I'm just glad I don't have a car at the moment..
Hearing stuff like this just puts me off buying a car completely in this kip of a country

It annoys me so much to think just 20 mins on a plane away , I could be driving a 2/3 year old sports car on decent roads and not being absolutely raped to Buy, Insure, tax and maintain it!

Its gone up across the board anyway so its no big suprise.

Its not gone up that much either, certainly nowhere near what it used to be years ago.

Young lads can still get insured for half what I paid at their age.

Insurance in the UK isn't as cheap as you think either.

There are more insurers in the market holding down prices than Quinn - don't believe the charitable fella hype - Quinn was in business to make money not to public service.

Just ask anyone obtaining quotes for last 6 months - there will be a multitude of companies they found cheapest (whilst maintaining cover standard).

The claims at turn of year hurt insurers but also stock markets etc are down and it is hard for them to make income from the money they are receiving from premiums outside of the insurance.

    Therefore necessary to increase incomes.

Had one new policy this year and one renewal, the automatic renewal was the cheapest I've ever had and the new policy again was very cheap all things considered.

As Draffodx points out, my first insurance policy on a 1 litre Punto when I was in my 20s about 12/13 years ago cost just over 2,000 punts.

I'm just after renewing mine this week. The policy wasn't too bad but I noticed that the excess had gone up to €250 (from €125 for the last few years I think).

I called Zurich to ask why and was told that their costs had risen so they were increasing the excess to discourage smaller claims rather than put up the premiums.

I've always found my quote to be cheaper here than an equivalent quote in the UK - even taking into account currency fluctuations. Plus they have a far bigger market to spread the risk on.

As a few people have said, insurance will still be cheaper after the increases then they were under a decade ago.

Just done a couple of quotes as a comparison. One from my home in Drogheda with No Nonsense, and one from my dad's house in Bury, Greater Manchester (with a low risk postcode) from Direct Line.

Using my details, with the wife as additional driver and my 2.0i, 2005 Accord - No Nonsense are quoting €363.57.

Using the reg from a 2.0i Accord Sport from 05 that's on Autotrader, Direct Line are kicking out a figure of £712.93

I think the days of cheaper insurance in the UK are behind us. My Dad is paying nearly £400 for a 1.6 Focus. No accidents, claims, convictions and a full NCB, in a 40 + year driving career - most of which is as a qualified Advanced Driving instructor.

FBD haven't been competitive since last year anyway. There are plenty of better insurers in Ireland than FBD and Quinn so I wouldn't worry too much about it OP.

I was with FBD for 3 years, no claims but they still put my premium up by nearly 50% for no reason, needless to say I walked away.

Nearly every other quote I got was cheaper, went back to FBD and they offered to knock €10 off..

Shop around and you'll save money..
