Congrats to Farranshone man Sean McGowan. He has become the first Irish person ever to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

He has rowed over 2443 NM and been at sea for nearly 4 months. A phenomenal achievement.

Hopefully there will be a huge turn out for him on his return to Limerick.

fair play to Sean...some acheivement especially considering his boat had no engine and at night he often drifted miles of course which added 100's of miles onto his journey.

You can see his entire progress charted here:

    http://www.atlanticrowingrace09.com/progress/byteam/5

There were days when he had to row constantly just to avoid being carried backwards by the current and other mornings were he woke up to find he was further back than when he had started the previous day.

To have the will, determination and drive to keep going like that for 4 months is sensational.

Wow, the Brittania III is seriously off course. There are loads of boats doing this by the look of it, I didnt realise there were this many people in the world that could go through that.
Looks like Sean has 200 km to go. Not long now.

edit: Looks like the Britannia is a non racer, according to the list.

Over half of those boats were team efforts.
He has already passed the point were he is offically considered to have rowed across the atlantic.

Limerick's Sean McGowan has become the first Irish rower to row solo cross the Atlantic.

Sean arrived in Antigua today at 5pm Irish time, flying the Munster flag on his boat Tess.

After 118 days at sea and 2,500 nautical miles completed, Sean was met in Antigua by family members. He departed from the Canary Islands in January.

A major celebration is expected when he arrives back in Shannon Airport next Friday.

Brilliant rowing and congratulations Sean. :)
