    Hi Folks,
I'm at the stage now where I have to decide on what insulation to put between the rafters and above the attic in my new build.

    Any suggestions please?
I have two mono-pitch roofs with 9 inch rafters
The two storey section has 8 inch rafters.

    Regards,
    Eddie

    as per here:

    eddie....

surely you have already engaged an architect / engineer to carry out a DEAP assessment to check if your build complies to regulations of not???

If you haven't, stop right now and get one done... you CANNOT know whether you are complying with regulations or not... this is vital to your build!!!

Have you even got a professional engaged to consult with and certify???

before you turn a sod you should know exactly what insulation is going into your build... not knowing leads to retroactive action which WILL cost you money.

    Hi Syd,
My engineer has suggested 150mm rafterloc or fully fill the rafters with sheepswool/hemp...

Just wondering what others would recommend..

    Eddie

Are you insulating on the flat or along the rafters?, have you a room in the roof, have you downlights? If so then you need to get the roof right for these reasons.

    1. Warm air is bouyant and will escape through the roof.
    2. The roof is vented and wind moving under the slates reduces the effectivness of insulation.
    3. The sky can radiate -170 degrees on cloudless nights.
    4. Roof tiles can get up to 80 degrees on sunny days
    5. Timber moves so gaps will increase between insulation and rafters.
    6. Plumbers and electricians love making holes.

    How to address this:
I usually specify softboard outside the rafters then a double rafter system or a rafter with rail inside to bulk out the thickness to fill with 250-300 cellulose. OSB 15mm inside taped to form an airtight layer and then a services cavity to suit the downligher size. Anything less than this, you'll be revisiting in the next 4 years, in my experience.
