I told him petrol estates are not that desireable so he could get this one for a song

What do you reckon is a song ? To be honest I don't think it's badly screen priced at the moment.

Think its a bit high myself for a low sales, relatively thirsty petrol estate. Lovely car though. Wouldn't go higher than 13k on that

Well if you'd give them €13K that backs up my point that the screen price isn't bad, screen price - 10% = :)

It's manual and it's not an Outback, which probably limits its appeal. Still a lot of car for €13k, though.

Considering it cost well over 30k brand new, it is not badly priced at all. If it was an auto it would be gone by now at that money.

    Suppose so :D

€13k wouldn't be my first offer to him though

well a song I was suggeting would have been about 13k myself.

TomMc, are the petrol autos on these a lot more desireable? WHY?

The saloon model isn't half as desirable as the estate version, especially on the used market. In much the same light, people who traditionally buy Legacy's in Europe (not Japan) prefer an auto over a manual. Just because it isn't a pretentious German car, doesn't mean their owners don't prefer their creature comforts and a more civilised mode of transport, especially in the case of the less performance orientated models.

If Subaru folk want a rally car for the roads, they buy an Impreza WRX/STI turbo with a manual gearbox. If they want refinement they go for more polished / civilised big brother the normally aspirated Legacy and preferably with an auto. If they want to drive down fields they buy an Outback. And if they want added versatility but with a car-like driving experience they buy a Forester. Subaru know this hence even the performance Spec B version (old Legacy model now) sold as much or more with the auto box.

At the end of the day, when buying used it isn't such an issue. You are getting a great car for less than half price, so been manual shouldn't be seen as much as an issue, if thats what yo prefer to drive. The manula trans will probably give less trouble over the long haul. You are not losing your shirt as you will be selling on third hand and will probably keep it long enough to get your monies worth.

I would've thought diesels would be doable for 13k now?

Surely an outback would be worth less than that even. then again there probably aren't that many for sale outside the small Subaru network so they have a degrere of control over the price.

Diesel wasn't available in them until 2008 and I'd say when the diesel tourers start showing up on the used market in a year or 2 they'll be snapped up pronto

Before the diesel engine option came out the petrol Outback cost 45K or so new and came in 2.5L and with a much higher spec, not 2.0L. So would have a 2-3K+ premium on the used market, over the equivalent Legacy at least. Even allowing for Ireland's dislike for anything over 2 litres.

If a 2008 diesel Legacy Estate cost 28-30k new (it was underpriced), it would be worth 18k+ after just 2 years or in todays market, given a brand new model costs 37k.

The other good point on the '07 petrol model originally shown, is that it has 600 a year road tax, not too bad under the old system. Till the next budget at least.
